The Gardaí are investigating possible paramilitary links to a sophisticated counterfeiting operation that was uncovered near Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois last week. Four men were arrested when printing presses and other forging equipment was recovered from a pair of trailers that had been buried underground. It's believed the gang were engaged in counterfeiting high-denomination Euro notes.

Some of those arrested have past republican connections including one who is a former senior Provisional IRA figure from the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast. While Gardaí initially said they believed the counterfeiting operation was a purely criminal affair, the possibility of organised republican paramilitary involvement is also being investigated.

Regardless of who was involved, it is a criminal activity. The IRA has been stood down.

There are criminals and there are 'special' criminals. Which court will these guys end up in, assuming they're charged?

The Labour Party were never involved in counterfeiting. Please be careful in making allegations

It's fair to point out that some of its leaders belonged to an organisation that was involved in counterfeiting - a long time ago mind you.

Then point out that some of its leaders were involved, but separate it from accusing the party.

If you were a member of an organisation 20 years ago, should an organisation you are a member of today be responsible for your actions ?

Jeez, will ya stop being so reasonable. Reason, balance and perspective are not welcome on a thread like this.

What's needed is some good old knee-jerk point scoring, y'know the sort of thing, full of moral indignation but devoid of thought. The kind of thing so beloved of the hundreds of thousands who rush out of a Sunday to hoover up the latest poisonous garbage from the Sindo, Sunday Times, Sunday World etc.

It's part of what we are, part of the mindset that led to a failed state and defunct society.

One of those arrested was Anthony Sloan, who escaped from Crumlin Road prison in 1981.

The phoenix is saying this was hushed up because one of those arrested was a close associate of the SF leadership
It says:

Apart from Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, there is no name as easily recognised as the man arrested.
Even casual readers or viewers know the name because of its frequent mention in the media.

Wonder who it is?

Last poster mentioned a Anthony Sloan who I never heard of.

no offence ROC but i can remember the Workrs Party saying precisely the same thing when one of their money presses was found in dublin in the 1980s . And i can remember all of us shinners snorting derisively at their defence .

anyways , they should be congratualted for contributing to the economy at this rate . Although printing euros could well be a waste of paper .

If they were paying attention to this board, they'd know they should be intensively rearing squirrels instead.

No more illegal/immoral than Western Government activity across the board.
