Hi Guys,

An interesting read, linked to by Paul Krugman from here:

Ireland Agonistes - NYTimes.com

The linked article:

http://www.eurointelligence.com/index.php?id=581&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=2973&tx_ttnews[backPid]=901&cHash=484db55c3a

"Irish citizens may bring down the bailout of foreign bank creditors by voting at the ballot box, but if they do not, they will bring about a default of some kind by voting with their feet. "

An interesting comment added under the Krugman page: By PUk, comment 5:

"I'm reminded of the sentiment in a speech William Jennings Bryan gave about a century ago, and with poetic license alter its most famous passage slightly, exchange "gold" for "euro":

Having behind us the producing masses of this nation and the world, supported by the commercial interests, the laboring interests and the toilers everywhere, we will answer their demand for a euro standard by saying to them: You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of euros."

Wow, O'Rourke really writes a good article. Must keep an eye on his musings from now on.

Strong stuff. What is to be done?

Reading the self-loathing and cynicism on many of the threads here, I think the Irish people are going to waste this crisis.

If we end up with buggin's turn of fat-a*sed, imcompetent Labour, FG or SF ministers taking the place of fat-a*sed, incompetent FF ministers in the same merks and perks, elitist offices with a circus of a powerless legislature full of overpaid local councillors, while "mardarins and ministers" make the laws that the lads just rubber-stamp with no oversight or input ... then we deserve all we get.

Kick the bastards out, and start writing a new constiution for a real republic. Originally "republics" meant the rejection of oligarchy, monarchy and aristocracy, the rejection of corruption and the encouragement of a public-spirited polity. Is that what we have?

Well, we're not a Monarchy or an Aristocracy and any modern democracy is an oligarchy.

The sad fact is that FF were voted in as the largest party in the last three general elections despite evidence of their incompetence and corruption.
