Ireland Could Become A "Rogue State" Over Abortion Restrictions Says Colm O'Gorman

Ireland risks joining North Korea, Iran, Sudan and Syria on the list of "rogue states" if the government fails to heed the demands of the UN to legalise abortion in Ireland according to Colm O'Gorman, the Executive Director of Amnesty Ireland.

According to Wikipedia, "rogue state is a controversial term applied by some international theorists to states they consider threatening to the world's peace. This means meeting certain criteria, such as being ruled by authoritarian regimes that severely restrict human rights, sponsor terrorism, and seek to proliferate weapons of mass destruction." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_state

Mr O'Gorman's bewildering remarks came in the wake of yet another demand by the UN for Ireland to legalise abortion.

On this occasion, the UN Human Rights Committee (a body which is headed by Saudi Arabia), said that Ireland's ban on abortion subjected a woman carrying a foetus with a fatal abnormality to discrimination and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. They are demanding that the woman be compensated and the government have been given 180 days to formulate a response.

According to the group, "the State party should amend its law on voluntary termination of pregnancy, including if necessary its Constitution, to ensure compliance with the Covenant, including effective, timely and accessible procedures for pregnancy termination in Ireland, and take measures to ensure that healthcare providers are in a position to supply full information on safe abortion services without fearing being subjected to criminal sanctions."

I suppose it's the nature of the job that O'Gorman has to escalate his rhetoric to justify his massive salary. The Outrage industry is highly competitive now. Many wannabe worthies looking to get a look in. Quangoistas can't sit back too much. Must keep busy.

Once Shamnesty abandoned their dwindling role as defenders of victims of torture/unfair imprisonment and moved into socio-sexual politics, it was inevitable we'd get crass outbursts like this. Where the moral claims become more contested, the noise must be louder as a substitute for certainty.

He and the rest of the abortionistas can f** right off, they might be better off concerning themselves with sorting out the debacle in Syria. After the EU, the UN is the next autocratic waste of time we need to ditch.

He's lost the plot - time for AI to get rid of him before he does irreparable damage to the organisation.

Yet again we have an unelected international body interfering in the internal affairs of our state and cheer-led by neo-liberal extremists who disguise their rantings in the veil of "equality".
Have we not divested enough sovereignty?

In the case of Fatal Foetal abnormality, there is only one group of individuals who are ultimately qualified to make those decisions ... and they are the Medical Profession. No one else.

There is no doubt that there is a certain cohort of people, to whom I suspect the protagonist mentioned in the OP belongs, who would also attempt to impose (through media coercion), not only abortion on demand, but eugenics, euthanasia and a reduction in the legal age of consent on the Irish people ... all in the name of equality.
It is time the Irish people called these people out and robustly challenged them on these matters.

If the Irish people wish to hold a referendum, then it is a matter for the Irish People ... not the UN or for that matter, any organization masquerading as an NGO and who have been widely criticized for selection bias, political bias and severely deviating from the core business of true human rights issues.

There are many good people in Amnesty worldwide, but regrettably I don't contribute upon meeting their street collectors anymore, primarily because of Mr O Gorman's condescending attitude towards the Irish people. He has in effect replaced the strict catholic pulpit-bashing of old with his own secular form of pulpit-bashing through TV/print media and social media.

never had much time for shAmnesty international and despite having no truck with the pro life fanatics I would suggest Colm O'Gorman leave the running of this country to the people (and the halfwits we elect). I know it is soooooo difficult that the plebs wont do what they are told but we would like to hang on to what little democracy we have left.

Both North and South Irish people have the bad trait of being hyperbolic to the point of hysteria at times but this really takes the biscuit.

Are there any other rogue states with free and fair elections? The only rogue in this situation is O'Gorman.

There are other countries in the world that ban abortion, how come they're not being threatened by the UN and Amnesty International?

Such vulgar stupidity. The US and UK are launching drone strikes on small children and medical facilities in the developing world and Ireland is a 'rogue state' because we have chosen, democratically, to not allow abortion on demand.

How do these people keep their world view intact? I suggest they go to see the Friday, post prayer, public executions in Saudi if they want to see how a rogue state operates.
