Ireland to be a single European constituency in 2019?

This afternoon, the Green senator, Grace O'Sullivan, is tabling an electoral amendment in the Seanad which would see Ireland becoming a single 11-seat national constituency for the 2019 European Parliament elections. Even more intriguingly, the noted NI unionist commentator, Newton Emerson, shared a video with his social media followers explaining how NI residents with Irish citizenship could continue voting in European elections after Brexit, suggesting that unionism would have no innate opposition to joining the electoral roll for such a national ballot:

If that did come to pass, the unionists could, by using their heads, have someone elected to Europe in ROI. But, using their heads seems to be a bit alien to many of them.

I wouldn't have a problem with that idea.

Would be better if it was a 3 or 4 seater though than an 11 seater, and do same reduction across the EU

Might make more people listen to the arguments being made and actually consider what their candidate will do in Europe

So much for Irish 'Independence'.

Fought for it, won it, couldn't wait to give it up.

Not really, reducing the Assembly in NI didn't have any manifest destiny about what would result.

Also by my maths NI would only have been represented by a sole Unionist under that format, possibly Ian Paisley for most of the time there.

I think we will have a lot more issues to concern ourselves with in 2019 apart from whether NI Unionists, or NI generally, continues to elect MEP's to the European Parliament. After all, our existing MEP's are such household names, aren't they?

What's the rationale behind it?

Would give smaller parties a greater chance of representation, presumably.
Based on a turnout of 2 million plus, it would set a quota at about 170,000 votes. Get half a quota of first preferences and you're in with a chance.

You'd vote for Dana for a laugh, admit it!
Can we send here to the ECB to annoy Frankfurt banks and Parisian insurance heavyweights ?

On a more serious note I would put her ahead of Brine Hayes and Eamonn bailout Ryan.

Can we just get Brian Crowley off the ticket anyway.
