https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/oct/09/britain-to-push-post-brexit-uk-immigration-controls-back-to-irish-border

The Guardian is reporting that the Irish government is negotiating with the UK to extend their new post-Brexit border around the Republic. We would police entry to Ireland and hand over detailed information to them. UK immigration rules would be implemented by Irish border control staff in Irish airports.

This is an attempt avoid a 'hard border'. It sounds unconstitutional to me - such a transfer of sovereignty would require a referendum. It would also solve nothing. The UK leaving the Single Market will require a customs border anyway, and EU citizens cannot be excluded from moving to Ireland, and cannot be prevented from going via Belfast to Britain if there is no border within Ireland.

This daft idea must be opposed. What is Sinn Fein's view on it I wonder?

We need an all Ireland Immigration Service

- something SF would never agree to

- as they favour Mass Immigration into Ireland

An 'all Ireland immigration service' wouldn't work with the North is run by London.

Under the GFA All Ireland bodies can be established

SF are now an Internationalist Globalist Party

- they are no longer Nationalist but Post Nationalist

All this is posturing by them

For years nay decades they were against everything the European Project stood for

- going right back to 1972 when they campaigned against the Republic of Ireland joining the EEC

- now in 2016 they are impeccable Europeans who are fully in favour of the European Union

- who can take a Party like this seriously?

They are Spoofers through and through....

An 'all Ireland immigration service' will work wonderfully - so long as the Republic sets the standards and the UK foots the bill.

And I think that could be negotiated.

Sounds reasonable to me. It's just the kind of compromise that could make brexit more palatable for all concerned.

Post Brexit there are only 2 ways to get into the republic via France by ferry or into an irish airport, if we have a zero tolerance approach then we will have no issues, none of this bullsh!t that pal gets on ferry/plane with passport/identity document and then dumps it before arriving at irish immigration (a joke of a term really).

Immediately return them to the departing destination, no questions. If we do this then it is far more likely that it will be the brits with the leaky border and not us.

So no free movement of EU people into the whole island of Ireland?
No - EU citizens will be allowed to move to the Republic. They just wont be allowed to go north of Dundalk, but no one will check.

This is madness.

So what is this the point of hardening Irish borders? :?

Except --- that wont work at all.

There are 10,000s of people who are perfectly entitled to live in Ireland who are forbidden to visit the UK. People here on Irish work visas may not go to the UK without a UK visa. Unless this plan is to abolish all Irish visas, this whole thing is stupid.

Unfortunately we live in a time when a plan being stupid is not a reason to think politicians wont do it.

What does "hardening Irish Borders" mean? 90% of the illegal immigrants in Ireland arrive from the UK and we don't police that border at all. And this plan would leave that border as it is - wide open.

If they want to go to the UK then they will have to apply for a visa, you make it perfectly clear to them that if they are caught in the UK without a visa they will not just be deported from the UK but also from the republic home, that is the terms of the visa. No grey areas, no excuses, you will be sent home full stop.
