Like everything we do in this country, reform will only happen when there's no other option.

The pension liability scenario is absolutely terrifying to anyone who even peeks at the figures. Yet nothing substantial will be done until there's no money left in the pot.

Also, remember when the Troika came into town and said we need to reform our legal services ?
Yep.
That all went very quiet too.
Troika legal reforms now face delays

Too many vested interests all over the place.
And consecutive governments too eager to listen to them.

What dependency culture? The business interests which expected the State to bail them out?

Also, Brendan Burgess?
No, no, no it's FG's latest kill the poor national drive masquerading as concern for some lofty ideals.

P.ie being jam packed with wing nuts will be more than willing to take part.

In 2006, at the height of the boom, youth unemployment in Limerick was 50%: and there was not a word about that failure from anyone in Government, certainly not the city's TDs.
While that jackass Noonan is on €180,000 plus expenses, the useless sponger.

Yes.
And you know there's something seriously wrong when the bill to bail out those banks is dwarfed by 'normal' government (over)spending.

A fish rots from the head.

But to answer the question, I imagine little or nothing will be done about it seeing as 50+% of Irish citizens receive welfare payments from the state.
Anyone who ever had kids was on 'childrens allowance' welfare, even billionaires!

Dole payments should be linked to past income tax payments.

How about, you are entitled to three times the amount of income tax you have paid.

Perhaps this incentive to declare income and pay tax on it might limit the black economy too.

It's because certain sectors of the economy are practically closed to Irish nationals including hospitality, fruit packers etc. Despite claims its about filling skills shortages, the CSO says non nationals are disproportionately represented in minimum wage and below minimum wage employment.
Gibberish. The reality is foreigners do the jobs Irish people won't.

We need to dismantle our culture of dependency - Independent.ie

Do any of our politicians even think this is an issue?
What will the long term effects of this be?
What a stinking heap of wingnut propaganda! Their desperation in trying to prove some petty point is obvious in the fact that they talk about 'jobless families' rather than the jobless. What really needs to be asked is why do so many families need both adults working to maintain a living? If only one adult could support the family then the available work would be spread much further and there would be far fewer 'jobless families'.

The whole idea behind the article is of the meanest and most transparent half witted bullsh!t.

A Universal Basic Income would help.

How much of a UBI do people get ?
Does everyone get it (unemployed as well as billionaires) ?
Are there additional benefits beyond UBI, such as rent allowance ?

What happens to the junkies who spend all their UBI on drugs on day 1 ?
