Linda Burney first Aboriginal woman to be elected to Australia’s House of Representatives accuses Irish for their role in atrocities against Aboriginal people in Australia.

So what exactly did the Irish do as part of the British oppression and when did it end or is it still ongoing the post colonial countries?

Is this a typical example of an exacerbation of a processes already in train by subordinates in the British Empire?

The Catholic church played a major part in trying to breed the black out of the children, the Christian brothers were in charge of many "missions" where the boys were abused and raped and killed by the thousand and nobody really cared because they were wealthy white foreigners who had colonised and stolen the land. The Daughters of Satan nuns were in charge of teaching the girls to become illiterate servants who would be farmed out to the wealthy to be worked day and night and also to be raped by the white masters.

A typical attack by Irish settlers in the Australia would see all the native men captured in an area. Then the women and children would be raped, tortured and murder in front of them. Then the men would be castrated and left to bleed to death. Then body parts would be put on display including human fetuses and male and female genitalia to warn off other natives. They really were horrific massacres. This is historical fact.

Same thing happen in NZ,Canada,US,Rhodesia,South Africa etc.

Dreadful, but typically as a sign of ' our maturity ' a few people in Ireland want to wear a poppy in 'honor' of the rapists and murderers in the British forces from Ireland who carried out such acts against the Aborigines but also in India, Africa etc Some ' maturity ' all right

You omit the wonderful US of A in your list, the worst perpetrator of all genocides. Have you figures or a link on NZ for such atrocities? I always thought that settlement was quite benign apart from the land grab aspect.

The wearing of the poppy in Ireland really is unnecessary and says a lot about those who wear it.

The atrocities committed on the Aboriginal people in Australia was appalling. They wiped out the entire population in Tasmania. I read an article about it and it was the most horrific thing I have ever read. The absolute and unnecessary cruelty was truly depressing.

Something of a fantasy post. Would you rather the Aborigines didn't receive an education at all? Do you think that church provided education in Africa was/is a bad idea?

Though it tired the USA didn't exterminate a whole race of people, unlike the British empire who exterminated the Tasman Aborigines. Yep, wear your poppy with pride West Brits.

Tasmanian Aborigines weren't exterminated.

In the 20th century the Tasmanian Aboriginal people were widely, and erroneously, thought of as being an extinct cultural and ethnic group.

She is being racist here.

Some Oz oppressors came from Ireland, but to guilt-trip the entire population of the island today because of what 1 or 2 of us did over 100 years ago is way out of line.

Like saying "all germans are nazis".

Only an eejit would buy into this line. Shame on you Michael D and the Irish Times for not calling it what it is, (out of a misguided sense of politeness?)

Michael D Higgins acknowledged, in his speech in Hobart on Saturday, the part played by Irish (convicts and others) in wiping out Tasmanian aborigines.

It was a fine speech. Although the bits as Gaeilge were a bit lost on the locals.

The history of European exploitation of the Southern Hemisphere is horrific. We annihilated indigenous peoples and entire ecosystems without mercy.

Only Antarctica was spared the attentions of the white man.

All this stopped in 1978 with granting self-governing status to the Northern Territory by the colonizing Anglo-Australian government?

I don't know. What's 'all this'?

Michael D was talking about events about 150 years before that though.
