The irish prison service are spending more than 42k a year on footballs.

The balls get burst by barbed wire.

Irish spending

The Examiner newspaper used the country's Freedom of Information Act to uncover government documents that showed €127,000 (£103,687) was spent on footballs over the last three years with razor wire being blamed for the high expense.

Denis Naughten, an Independent member of the Irish parliament, raised the issue in a parliamentary question last year saying: "An astronomical sum, over €42,000, is being spent every year on footballs. Surely with all the great minds we have in this country someone can come up with a solution. Surely sharp minds could design a netting to protect the balls from the razor wire."

The Freedom of Information documents revealed correspondence in response with the Irish Prison Service saying that the expensive was so high because "balls are continuously destroyed on the wire. Prison ensures adequate supplies of football are available as they don’t have many other recreational facilities."
Maybe they should make their own footballs?

if that was in The Onion it would go viral. Its might be a sneaky way to pay for drugs? one ball equals an 1/8th oz? the balls in the wire didnt make it over?

They should dramatically increase that budget, and purchase a few million sets of balls...............then distribute them to every man and woman of this country. Because we're obviously lacking in balls to face down this sort of thing!

Scenes from Escape to Victory II

Inmate From Dublin "Hey Stabbo pass the buhleedin bawel"
Surrounded by cavan prisoners, Sean Quinn, saunters up to Stabbo and takes the ball away from him, he picks up the ball and he and his entourage walk slowly over to the barbed wire fence where he presses the ball against the wire. Pop. He throws a finger at the Prison Guard. And asks for another ball.
Cavan Inmate "Sean Quinn is a victim in this - lets climb up on the roof and throw slates at folk"

So, the politicians think inmates have an inherent right to an unlimited supply of balls for their recreation???? WTF????

Maybe they should make their own footballs?

"Lads, ye mess around and kick the ball too high so it hits the wirte and bursts, ye can forget about another ball for a week."

Thats what should be siad to them lads in prison. 1 ball a week and if you burst one, no more football for a week. Be careful lads.
