The Republic really need to get a Welfare system similar to the UK's one. I thought Bertie Ahern, being a supposedly Socialist and all, would have done this a long time ago. Wouldn't you?

well considering that social welfare has increased by aprox 10% in each of the last 2 budgets and the take home pay of workers has been less than that , i do belive that the bertie has a socialist state

welfare is useful only in demoralising - in every sense of the word - the working class. as can be readily seen in the prisons, the maternity wards and the queus in surgeries demanding seroxat etc it has worked as well.

I think our modest version of the welfare state is very acceptable. In the U.K. the NHS is a fecking joke and a waste of money.

Irish people below poverty line: 10%

British people below poverty line: 17%

British unemployment 5%

Irish unemployment 4%

Ours seems to work fine.

None of those figures can be attributed to welfare.

Isn't a welfare state meant to eliminate or alleviate poverty? any welfare system that does not do that is a failure.

We have a welfare to work system that seems to be workign just fine for us.

It can of course be related to welfare, if we had a rights based welfare system our unemployment rate would be far higher.

In my opinion Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence.

Admirable, but some welfare cannot be eliminated, for instance Carers allowance.

The Secretary General at the Dept Social Protection admits that the 'welfare cheat' campaign was a mistake. Does @campaignforleo agree? #pac

This chappie is a complete snowflake...the dogs in the street know that welfare cheating is rife and endemic in our fair land.I am a small businessman trying to compete with vat dodgers ,dole scroungers ,sick leave chancers etc etc.

Have had to employ mainly Eastern Europeans whose attitudes and work ethic would put the lazy cheating Irish workers to shame ...not all of them mind but a very worrying percentage !

Bloody snowflake ....

Squeaky clean new Secretary General dumping on his predecessor - I hope Niamh O'D tears him a new one at the DSP Christmas Party - and believe me, she has the balls to do it!

Leo ran that campaign to get himself promoted and it worked.

As for the rest of you, do you seriously think that I and many others like myself, prefer to be blacklisted on the dole than working?

Do any of you have any inkling of an idea on how hard it is to back into the job market? I really doubt it is the case.
