Is Clare politics damaging Limerick's development?

Thanks!!

While you might be joking, this split between Limerick and Clare is really damaging the prospects of both.

Limerick City is on the border of counties Limerick and Clare. It's as much Clare's city as it is Limerick's. We'd all be a lot better off if we got over the parochial ************************e.
Don't forget Tipp either , the border begins only a few miles from the city. Mid West University and Mid West Airport should do the trick.

Mid West Airport maybe but Mid West University? Nah, not yet. Wait until they've mastered their three-times tables.

But they have some cutting edge intellects: Cllr Crowe and Timmy Dooley come to mind

I was referring to Tipp. Clare haven't yet got to using their toes for counting.
Ah now. did you ever short change a Clare person: it doesn't happen twice.

This post so typifies the level of parochial gombeen whinging that infests Ireland. "If we don't stand to directly benefit then no one will!"
one cannot claim there is gombeen politics, look at limerick and wonder how it has never got any help to flourish by three high powerer ministers, noonan, sullivan and o'dea

Not that I'd be one of his fans but Baldy has delivered jobs and infrastructure projects for Limerick that we wouldn't have got if we didn't have a minister in the Cabinet. His predecessor as Limerick's champion in government, the Rat O'Dea, hadn't the balls to live up to his position and delivered absolutely nothing but ridicule during more than twenty years of topping the polls.

We're off again on the rood to doom and gloom:

Parts of

There was flooding in Mountshannon. Putting two and two together to make five, those well-known civil engineering experts, Councillors Crowe and Clifford, have taken this as proof that any bridge over the Shannon Northern Distributor Road is likely to be washed away.

Jeez, how did Sarsfield Bridge, Thomond Bridge, the Shannon Bridge, Athlunkard Bridge and the University Bridge all manage to survive?

And who is the councillor in the article so worried about being intimidated by engineering and road traffic logic that he refuses to identify himself? Oh, happy are we that we're served by such brave public representatives.

It might make sense to merge Limerick and Clare Councils - the divide seems very artificial in some ways. The Kingdom of Thomond was on both sides of the shannon.

good point. I think parts of Clare which want to retain their county identity for sport etc should undoubtedly be allowed to do so. However these municipal areas should be part of the administrative district of the city -for planning etc- but still remain County Clare. a simple but effective solution. Regarding the proposed route if a serious waste of money. If you doubt my opinion please look at the photographs of the land in flood on which they propose building a motorway - see Clare Council Flood Impact study . building a FLOODPLAIN in 2015. its delusional.
In Germany the state of North Rhine-Westphalia was formed by combining Rhine Province and Westphalia, but the state was still divided in two as Wiki puts it:

The most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia is uniquely divided into two area associations (Landschaftsverbände), one for the Rhineland, and one for Westphalia-Lippe. This arrangement was meant to ease the friction caused by uniting the two culturally different regions into a single state after World War II. The Landschaftsverbände now have very little power.

It would make sense to put Limerick and Clare together for Administrative / Council purposes. I think it would have been better if this had been done rather than the recent amalgamating Limerick City & County Council. We should have a strong City Authority with it's proper boundary and then the towns like Ennis, Newcastle West etc could have Management Bodies based on their size. Better Regional Development, use of resources, and a counter-balance to Dublin, should be the outcome of counties combining for day to day Administration. Maybe other counties could combine in the same way but that is probably a pipe-dream:lol:

Finally, some sense appears to be penetrating the skulls of Limerick City and County Council. After almost the entire council rolling over to accommodate a couple of objectors on Mountshannon Road, it looks as if the Northern Distributor Road will get the go-ahead after a long and pointless delay.
Limerick councillors all set for crunch decision over Northern Distributor road - Limerick Leader

Predictably, the only member still claiming to believe the world will end is FG's Michael "Perry" Sheahan whose irresponsible attention-seeking opportunism was major influence in this debacle. Thankfully, he appears to be left on his tod as the other members realise that the Dublin Road and access to the M7, UL, the Clare suburbs, Corbally and the city's Northside will grind to a halt at rush hour unless the concentration of traffic between the Kilmurry and Mackey roundabouts is addressed.

I heard tht one FF Cllr in Clare wanted UL to change its name to University of Limerick and Clare as UL have expanded across the Shannon into the Banner.
