Is Ireland next in Trump's cross-hairs?

The Mexican economy is already reeling from a few well-chosen tweets from Donald Trump that targeted car manufacturers who'd planned to set up auto-plants in that country.

This afternoon, during his press conference, the President-Elect made similar comments about pharma companies saying:
“We have to get our drug industry coming back. Our drug industry has been disastrous. They’re leaving left and right. They supply our drugs, but they don’t make them here. To a large extent."

Ireland is heavily dependent on US drugs companies and the pharma and medical technology sectors employ 50,000 jobs here. Pharmacological products make up 50% of goods exported from Ireland so were this business moved to the USA, our exports would take a huge hit.

Are we the next country in Trump's cross-hairs?

Trump accuses Big Pharma of "getting away with murder".

I for one think that Politics.ie should aim to get a denunciation from President Trump.

America's drug industry is alive, busy and thriving in Colombia and Mexico.

Those rules he complains about were written by the Republicans in congress under Bush, Jr. Those same republicans are still in congress. Nothing will change.

I was about to say that a lot of the crystal meth used in the USA was manufactured in the USA but in fact these days, after a clampdown in the US, it does seem to be made in Mexico.

Ireland is in everyones' cross hairs at the minute... Trump, Brexit, EU... even if it's not intentional but is 'collateral damage' as a result of events...

Time for our lot to cop on to this, to grow some balls and start working for their money on behalf of the country...

I suspect the famous phone call post election was used to mark Enda s card on this ,Trump has a hard on for Ireland but will he last long enough to exercise his prerogative in this matter?

So what should they do? Give us some details.

Avoid doing the 'best boys and girls in the class' sh!te they did after the crash which ended up with us paying debts we were never liable for and which nobody in their right mind ever dreamt we'd pay off... unsecured bondholders for example...

The 'best boys and girls in the class' bullsh!t strategy doesn't achieve anything other than to get you screwed over and treated with contempt... that much was proven without doubt by our cretinous subservient arseholes in the wake of the 2008 crash...

But that's in the past. What's done is done.

I meant what do you think they should do in the future? Give some specific examples of actual policies you'd like to see implemented.

The answers to clean up a lot of stuff are very simple... 'real transparency, real accountability and real consequences for crooks and cheats'...

Do that and you solve a lot imo.

What they should do in addition to that is to get selfish on behalf of Ireland and get smart and stop trying to placate everyone and be a bit more like the disruptive child in the class as opposed to the diligent child who is taken for granted.

Don't you think we have enough with our home-grown trolls?
First John Drennan. Then MMOC. Now Michael McDowell. The trajectory is up and up. Trump should be our natural next target.

The key question is not "what will Trump do".

The key question is "what will our clowns in charge do ? ".

Based on Brexit, they will do nothing. The Snapchat announcement has given us the results of dithering. More to come there.

WE HAVE TO GET OUR ACT TOGETHER. For the moment Trump is mostly interested in getting manufacturing back to the US, from Mexico and China. Do we have a plan ? Our cost base is too high. It is pushed up by a state system that gives people lotto-scale salaries for doing SFA.

We have a competitiveness problem.

Congress will protect pharma. Pharma has paid top dollar to buy congress outright and has nothing to fear.
