Is it not time for the 2nd Republic and the dismantling of the elites?

Remember the French are on their 5th Republic and we are also approaching 100 years of independence. The Irish Republic is over 60 years of age so to be sure we have developed into a true Republic then the political, banking and property czar elite, who have bankrupted the country, should step aside.

The country needs strong but fair leadership with a cross party consensus which unfortunately won’t happen in the current frenzy for blame etc. The approaching Dublin Mayoral Election or the Presidential Election could provide a platform for an independent minded person to step from this SHAMBLES and actually make a difference!

Both positions you have identified have no political clout whatsoever. The president is a figurehead and the mayoral election is not going to happen any time soon despite what Gormley advised.

Yes the Dublin mayoral election is the start of the people of Ireland getting a say! Not the 27 free and fair general elections we've held over the past 80 years. They were stupid.

Then go and get yourself elected.
The President is head of state but the function has been watered down since the Republic was formed. However mary Robinson showed what a campaigning President can achieve.
The Dublin Mayor will have full control and the election will happen for Mayor before year end as JG has promised.

No we would simply replace one elite with another. We need reform.

Could we maybe have the 1st one first? The 1st (and only) Irish Republic was crushed in 1922 to be replaced by the Free State...the forerunner of the present pseudo-Republic of Ireland (note: NOT the same as the Irish Republic). A lot of the problems of the state stem from its gombeen political culture which resulted from this imperfect break from our colonial past (in my humble opinion).

Have we changed enough as a people to justify having one?

Stick with trying for a first first.

Can we not ditch the whole antiquated terminaology of Republic altogether. I don't think there's any fear of us falling back into the hands of some little monarchy ever again.

What are you on about? We are on our second Republic already - the first lasting from 1916-1921. What we need is a Third Republic.

Are IBEC and/or ICTU prepared to tolerate this ?

Only if they get even more control, I reckon.

I reckon if we got a second one, it would become even more hijacked to vested interests than the first one.

Considering most republics end up with political family dynasties whats the difference?

At least you can fire them.

Vote out one set only to replace them with another with a different name but same policies, very much like different warring factions of royal families. Sounding more like a monarchy all the time.

Its time to ditch this second "Republic" and build up the first one, which never went away, you know!

How about the "Southern Irish Province of the European Union"? It has a certain poetry about it. The danger is that we might be ruled well for a change.
