Have any of you been following the attempted take over of Tower Hamlets council in London by Islamic supremacists? An entryist plot that nearly suceeded in replacing local Labour with Islamic fundamentalists allied to the IFE was foiled late in the game but has not deterred the group behind it.
They've managed to get the system changed to a mayorlty and are now within grasp of having the mayorship. Some will see this as merely democracy in action. Others (including me) will be less sanguine. This is a man with close links to Islamic fundamentalism and the backing of prominent racists who this week could elected with almost total control over its £1 billion budget.
Multiculturalism can be seen to be doing two things in Europe these days. Unraveling in the eyes of the greater public as the mad and perverse ideology that it is, and bearing the first crop of many harvests to come. There is hope at least in so far as it is now permitted, even in polite company, to voice opposition to the whole idea. Europe needs to correct the balance here before the far right seize upon this issue as it appears both Merkel and Sarkozy have recognized.
