Ivana Bacik says she's not the only non-DubCentral resident running in Dublin Central

If there is one woman in the Irish Public life that makes my blood boil and my skin crawl its her.
I think there are a lot of ABB's (Anybody But Bacik)* in Ireland. I wonder could Dublin Central work to her advantage as some people might not know her as well as some of us do and so she mightn't have that disadvantage when it came to transfers?

* Not necessarily literally e.g. I'd class myself as an ABB but still in most elections she wouldn't be my very last preference (=not really a preference at all)

....not to mention Bacik's stance during the Citizenship Referendum campaign when she refused to accept that there was any evidence whatever for the fact that women were coming to Ireland to give birth. Didn't matter what the maternity hospitals had to say. That wasn't "evidence".
That sounds like the sort of thing that makes people frustrated by "PC" views.

It's one thing to believe in a cause having considered the issues. But sometimes some PC people only seem willing to take a PC position on an issue. And that can make them intolerant of others (I can't remember the exact phrase but I remember hearing a phrase something along the lines of: "there's none so intolerant as a PC person is of somebody not holding such a view" which seemed to make some sense).

Yeah, well the relevant district courts for the area is heard at the four courts, so I would say that is a pretty strong link to people's problems in the area.

I presume you think that the post is funny because the Criminal Courts are at the Four Courts? If so, that just shows your snobby attitude to Dublin central.

I know a couple of people at one of the big maternity hospitals and according to them, people are still coming to Ireland to give birth. For instance, people who fly here from Africa to give birth are pretty well-off. It's not a stunt to get citizenship, it's to get a safer childbirth.

Anyway, changes to the citizenship law has not stopped people flying here to give birth, so I would say that was a side-issue. The people who were actually affected negatively by the changes were the babies born to people who are actually living here, not the maternity tourists.

I would think that this particular issue was a side issue - whether you support automatic citizenship for babies born here or not.

Going back to Ivana Bacik and the issue, the erosion of rights of non-citizens living here was actually the relevant issue, not as I call them "maternity tourists". In fairness the people who fly in for birth could have been dealt with very easily by having a clause in the legislation where residence of the parents prior to the birth was a factor in gaining citizenship. That was not a part of the Citizenship Referendum at all.

I thought Bacik got a hard time on here previously, thinking she was ok. But the last night on the Frontline she came across as very annoying and a typical Labour gobshite. Seriously Labour people, shut up about Gilmore leading a coalition with FG. Your wan from Galway on VB the other night kept on about it and 'going forward'. Not looking forward to the new government.
