The French city of Orleans has for the first time named a mixed-race teenager to play folk heroine Joan of Arc for annual festivities, prompting a torrent of racist abuse from far-right social media users.
Mathilde Edey Gamassou was chosen among 250 girls Monday to play Joan for a spring festival marking the victory of the Catholic warrior saint in breaking the English siege of Orleans in 1429.

Personally I don't care what her skin tone is

- but she is not a descendent of French People

Seems an odd choice TBH

Official history books used in schools throughout the French colonies began with "Nos ancêtres les Gaulois" (Our ancestors, the Gauls). The girl and those who picked her are just following that race-blind tradition.

AKA "what's sauce for the goose..." :)

(Plus as Toland says, she's mixed race. How "pure" does someone have to be and are we sure everyone else passes your stringent criteria? Or is it just her skin-colour that matters after all?)

Is she not?

That single remark couldn't make it clearer that your problem is with her skin tone.
It isn't at all

- its that she a child of Foreigners and not French People

As you know the story of Joan of Arc or Jeanne d'Arc in French is a deep part of French National identity

It seems a bit insensitive and contrived to give the role to someone like this IMO

So you'd be howling equally loudly if the mother was called Schmidt and her da was a Hennessy.

Pull the other one.

Not really - two wrongs don't make a Right

- and the Right are heading to the barricades over this 1!

You missed the point, I didn't say it was wrong. It's not like the Min of Education wasn't aware of it. It was a deliberate strategy of portraying "Frenchness" as being something other than merely genetic.

But that racists don't want a mixed race girl playing Joan of Arc, well. colour me surprised.

(What does your title mean, BTW? I cant make head nor tail of it.)

Well she is at least a Catholic. Better her than the fruit of the loins of some Freemasonic type or savage atheist even if they are biologically French. I dont really have a problem with this.

Another day another thinly veiled race bait thread.

Id suggest getting a ride but such a postulous carbuncle such as yerself would be repellent to even the most strung out junkie in all of Blanchardstown.

She's a child and she's enthuastic about playing the role. Presumably, she's learned about her in school and admires her...So who are we to judge?

Plenty of Poles and West Africans have lived in France since at least the 19th century. Indeed west African troops fought for France in their tens of thousands in both world wars, while Algeria was considered a departement of Metropolitan France right up to independence. The Poles too have made their mark, without them France wouldn’t have Asterix (René Goscinny was born to Polish parents) while Chopin creates most of his works while in exile there - that of course disregards the immense contribution ordinary Polish industrial workers in Nord- Pas de Calais made in turning that region into one of the most industrially productive in Western Europe. This is rank racism and hypocrisy.

'The 17-year-old, whose father is from Benin and whose mother is Polish.'

Was unlikely that it was ever going to be the other way around was it? Was about 90% sure of that before opening the article.

And yet, she's French herself. Funny thing, that. Can't wait until this is touring at An Draíocht.

One of the things I've admired most about France is how culture seems to be a lot more important than race when it comes to defining national identity. Clearly, this story shows that this doesn't apply in all cases. However, it does explain how hardline Islam is causing such concern in France.

That concern isn't so much racism as culturism. Meanwhile, Catholicism hasn't gone away in France. Many people in the Front National hanker back to the golden age when La Belle France was La Fille Aînée de l'Église

Re the OP: This is a major international crisis with the potential to drastically influence the future of...something or other

Another major issues arising as a result of the growth in use of integrated appliances is how to clean under the hinge of a built in oven. This guide may help:

Lift the locking catch. Grasp the door by the sides and lift upwards to remove it from the appliance. You can now clean the door. To re assemble, offer the door up with the hinges into the slots on each side. Lower the door down and push the locking catches on both sides back to release the hinges. Carefully close the door and ensure it is lined up and shuts perfectly. If it is out of alignment re lock the hinges with the catches, lift the door off and then re fit it again.
