Bit of a Fuss after Jesuit Chaplain to Congress was "fired".... supposedly as a sop to the Anti-Catholics in the Republican Party. Possibly down to a sermon last November in which he it is said he interfered in politics ....

Lawmakers ask why the congressional chaplain 'was asked to resign'

More than 70 US lawmakers have demanded House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan explain why he fired the chamber's chaplain.

Catholic Reverend Patrick Conroy, who has served in the post for seven years, is the first House chaplain to be forced out.

The Jesuit said he may have lost his job because of a prayer.

Fr Conroy delivered the sermon last November, when lawmakers were debating legislation to overhaul the tax code.
Thankfully Paul Ryan is himself a Catholic, although that doesn't save him from the wrath of Niall O'Dowd at Irish Central... It seems Ryan isn't an anti-Catholic bigot, just a gombeen man traitor!

Gombeen man Paul Ryan fires Irish Catholic priest as House Chaplain to please anti-Catholics

Speaker Paul Ryan turned his back on his own Catholic faith in order fire Chaplin Fr. Pat Conroy to please anti-Catholic zealots in his own party.

There is no other explanation for what Ryan did, given that the Jesuit priest, a very popular figure in the chamber, had broken no laws. He was only the second Catholic chaplain in US history and the first among the 60 House chaplains who have served to be fired.
It'll be interesting to see who is appointed to replace him. I doubt if it will be a Rabbi or an Imam

Gaa...assh!
Who gives a damn about religion in the present Murkin cabinet. Denominations aside...
It might however increase in importance coming up to re-election time.

I know the atheists and anticatholics of p.ie will make hay on these pages. However if you bothered to read the prayer for which he was asked to resign , you might question who congress is governing for. It certainly doesn't appear to be for all of America. Just like government's the world over.

Seems a bit harsh to fire a jesuit. After all they've always been about politics more than religion.

The f*uck Congress should be having chaplains paid for out of US taxes anyway.

Separation of Church and State.

As for Ryan, he had better watch his own back, because he wont come out of Trump/Russia safe and sound.

Actually I'd suggest Niall O'Dowd and you lot are the ones who seem obsessed with religion - by the looks of things the guy was asked to leave by a fellow Catholic for political interference? No sign that he was fired for being Catholic - or that a Baptist chaplain wouldn't been fired in the same circumstances. He had been there seven years - which considering Congress is 227 years old and the average tenure has been ~ 3 1/2 years ....

Much more likely that he was asked to vacate and demurred. So they set someone to watch his sermon and bounced him out on the basis of that.

And some redneck congressman from mr jesus-country gets his favoured episcopalian installed.

It is washington.

Wrong denomination.

How many Episcopalians does it take to change a light bulb?

Two. One to ring a handyman and the other to mix the martinis.

It seems the good chaplain was insufficiently enthusiastic about tax cuts for the wealthy to merit continuation in his job.

That's the problem with the Jesuits - they're never never reliably on-message.
