Minister Joan Burton had to make a quick exit today whilst making a speech in a local shopping centre as hundreds of Anti-Austerity protesters turned up.

I've no link at the moment as it only happened in the last hour.

A Labour Minister should not have to be confronted by the poor:)

Abandoned her speech? Poor thing.

"Will somebody please think of the speeches"?

Terry Prone must be gutted. 15 minutes of careful speech-crafting amid a few gurns in the mirror and all down the drain.

Never mind. She can recycle it for the Minister for Health.

Them anti-oysterity lads are great defenders of democratic free speech.

How are people protesting legitimately 'anti-democratic'?

What austerity?

We have unemployment and we have debt. Both are crushing people. Austerity has nothing to do with it, or at best is little more than a downstream problem.

Much more important that we learn to protest again after our complicit silence through the CT years than that we listen to a government minister make an utterly predictable speech reciting the achievements of our betters.

Terrible isn't it, nearly as bad as the abandoned "flouncers"
Yeah, someone should think of them too.

Just not you and I eh?

So, were you there? What exactly happened, was she shouted down or did things get physical?

Was this flagged, or an off the cuff protest?

You have no idea of what Joan Burton has been confronted with during her political career.
Oireachtas salary and expenses? It is a bit much having to actually meet the people who are at the sharp end of one's policy discussions at cabinet table.

She has my deepest apathy.

Did she get to tell the protestors...."we are in this recession, because we've run out of money.." ??

If you don't let someone talk you're obviously denying them their right to free speech and free speech is crucial in any democracy.
