Wexford Fianna Fail TD John Browne has told a packed meeting in Wexford that he backs the campaign to retain 24 hour Accident and Emergency services at Wexford General Hospital because his wheelchair bound daughter pleaded with him that she needed it to care for her when she had consumed too much alcohol.
The meeting was called by local Labour Deputy Brendan Howlin following concerns that the local A&E was to be downgraded and relocated to Waterford 40 miles away. About 1,000 people attended the meeting which was chaired by local broadcaster, Alan Corcoran. The proceedings were recorded by South East Radio and are to be forwarded to the HSE network team at present driving the reconfiguration for the HSE to show the depth of concern in the county on the issue.
Starting his contribution to the meeting Deputy Browne said “My daughter is in a wheelchair and like all 23 year olds she sometimes gets drunk and ends up in A&E. She said to me coming out tonight that I better keep A&E open 24/7 because she’s not giving up drinking”. Deputy Browne went on to tell the meeting that he had spoken to the Health Minister Mary Harney and set out his concerns about the future of A&E at Wexford and that he believes it should be maintained.
Whatever about the rights and wrongs of reconfiguration, is it not the lowest of the low to exploit a daughter's excessive alcohol consumption for political expediency?

I have NEVER ended up in A & E after a nights drinking, nor have any of my friends. How about the young lassie exercise some self control, or is that too much to ask? What a diva, demanding a hospital stay open just for her.

Unbelievable stuff.
40 miles surely is not too much to ask.

This is why health must be kept out of the hands of politicians.
More inaction and overspending.

Deputy Browne has said his remarks, about his daughter, were a joke and said people, who were upset by them, should "lighten up".

FF politicians waste everyones time going to meetings like this. They always are against removal of services until it is put to them in a Dail vote. Then they take the Whip

Don't be stupid. I'm sure you ker-aaazy guys equate ending up in hospital as a mad laugh, and everyone will call you a "legend' afterwards. I don't view it that way.
But then I can hold my booze, that's the difference. ;)

Some "joke" !

Fianna Fail, eh ? Now, there's a joke.
Pathetic. This moron comes out with a pile of sh1t and when reasonable people react with horror, he claims it was all a joke. No wonder the poor girl drinks herself into a coma, with a monkey like this for a father.

Which remarks exactly were meant to be viewed a joke - that she drinks too much or that she's a wheelchair user who drinks, or that all 23 years old end up in A&E after a night out? In all seriousness, deputy Browne would want to consider what sort of remarks he makes. There again given that his contribution by why of remarks in the Dail was at the end of March, I suppose he has to say something controversial to remind his constituents that he is a TD.

She should buy herself a bottle of vodka (tho I'd recommend gin & tonic) and while still sober around 9 or 10 p.m wheel herself into the Emergency Room and start the drinking there. That way she'd be guaranteed good care four or five hours later when she's puking etc.

Deputy Brownes sense of humour is something else---was he suggesting by way of jocose comment that the A andE at Wexford should be kept open to facilitate his drunken daughter ? No wonder Bertie got rid of him as a junior minister tho he got a fair payoff from that as far as I can remember

Is this the same Deputy Browne from Wexford who used to present "diplomas" on behalf of Father Sean Fortune's bogus "Institute of Journalism" ?

No laughs when I was in a car crash back in 78.I wasn't even driving, but sitting in the back of a Thames van, having foolishly accepted a lift home from a party.Must have been about 2.am on a Sunday.A and E was open though.Never know whats around the corner.

My advice: get a cab.Pay in advance even. But A and E will always have a job to do.

It just sounds like a light hearted joke. Given that it’s a Fianna Fáil TD, people will never be sure. Someone else may have gotten away with a joke, but not anyone from FF.
A&E departments probably wouldn't be closing or limiting hours if it wasn't for this incompetent government.

john brown cracking a joke

listen lads, im a million miles away from john brown when it comes to politics but he has been known to have a strange sense of humor and he has had to deal with a lot of pain in his life. Iv seen his black humor first hand. the meeting you speak of was attended by every wanabe and their mother each screaming for more investment and none of them prepared to examine the real problems that afflict the place.
The wider issue of the downgrading of the hospital is the issue at hand and non of our erstwhile elected members, national or local are prepared to say what needs to be said about wex general hospital. it's a kip!!! a dirty filthy kip where many staff members feel that the purpose of opening the hospital was too provide them with well paid jobs. for the record, I happen to believe in providing as many services as locally as possible but it has to be fit for purpose and wexfor general is not!!! it fails to measure up.....
