John Dallat SDLP MLA is accused of trying to raise tensions before the marching season in areas with relatively good community relations

Two wildly different accounts have emerged of an incident in which a politician claimed he was set upon by a mob at a band parade in Co Londonderry.
John Dallat

John Dallat, the SDLP MLA for East Londonderry has often attracted attention for his one sided approach to goings on in the past and has a terrible relationship with the Unionist community in his constituency.

As you can see, the attention seeking little oik sped off into the oncoming marchers in a bright yellow Volkswagon Beetle. At the very least he is breaking the speed limit and is driving with no concern to pedestrians in what would of been an are fulled with pedestrians at the time.

I would like to see action take against the odious and obnoxious John Dallat in due course.

Hard to believe that JD didn't realise there was a band parade on before ordering his food, or that he thought he would be able to drive through them having collected it.

Was he breathalysed?
If not, why not?
cruimh

Its obvious to see what Dallats intentions were, you have a gang acting with near impunity in coleraine and when have we seen Dallat speak out against them? Has rightfully been a very active critic of Loyalist activity in his constituency, but on other issues regarding the drug gang he has been silent.

He disgraces the good name of the SDLP IMO

You think trying to drive through a band parade is responsible behaviour?
Now that would depend, you asked if he had been breathalysed, wouldn't the competent authority for that be police on the scene, or do you believe in kangaroo courts...hhmmnn...

But was he?
He sped off at quite the speed there in the direction of the marchers.

The police officer as you can see has clearly spotted the confrontation that Dallat initiates by driving head on into the band. The manner in which he drove head on into the band could no doubt of be seen as a deliberate attempt to obstruct the parade.

Dallat certainly believes in them, he went to the media and condemned people without any evidence.

If he sat in the car for 10 minutes being harassed why did he not film it? or maybe it never happedned.

The police witnessed the incident and didn't see any motoring offences committed by Mr Dallat because it is reasonable to assume that had he been speeding or drinking as is being implied, with no supporting evidence of course, they would have taken action against him. It is also entirely unreasonable to suggest that he would have known that there was a band parade that evening. I don't keep an eye on the marching timetable in my area and accidentally run into these sort of bothersome bozos from time to time, so I'd actually assume the opposite.

Dallat claims that some of the bands have known associations with loyalist paramilitary/terrorist groups. Is this true?
Should such parades be allowed anywhere near a predominantly nationalist town if that sort of riff raff were present?

“It was a loyalist parade by Boveedy Flute Band as distinct to an Orange parade.
“One of the bands was carrying a UVF banner and many would have links to loyalist paramilitaries.

Dallat has apparently now lodged a formal complaint with the police about the incident.
MLA John Dallat lodges complaint with police over parade

But the 70-year-old’s account has been heavily disputed by band organisers, who have accused him of trying to stoke up sectarian tensions ahead of the Twelfth of July.

Following a meeting with police in Coleraine, Mr Dallat told the News Letter: “Police have started looking for CCTV footage of the incident.

“Once that is provided by local traders and examined, it will put to bed all these claims that the attack did not happen.

“I wish it had not happened. It was a very traumatic experience for me.”
He seems confident enough that his version of events will be borne out by the police from CCTV footage provided by traders. He'd be a fool to make false allegations to the police at this point and I'd assume that he is well aware of the risks of doing that, so he is entitled to be given a fair hearing from everyone on this forum while the matter is being investigated.
In the circumstances, it would therefore be the most sensible response to refrain from further judgement until this has been looked at.

It would be seen as at the very worst rude, in any other part of these islands.

What everyone seems to miss is why were terrorists allowed to march through this town in full sight of the police?

Are people allowed to create an obstruction without proper notice being given and a security service provided by the organizers?

Or are the police just expected to control the marchers as well as bystanders?

In France, any organization holding a public assembly which wasn't properly managed by their own security detail would be given short shrift. Even without complaints of harassment from bystanders.
