Cancer, apparently.

Such a great actor with some fantastic roles down the years. RIP

RIP. A great actor.

I loved his caligula in "I Claudius"
and many other quirky roles.

He grew in skill and ability with age, and wasn't afraid to take risks in his choice of roles. RIP

Saw him performing Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape some years back in London. Superb. Seemed to be a very down to earth chap as well from all reports and that isn't a bad tribute for someone with his stature in his profession.

Roles I remember:the beaten-down, crushed, terrorised Winston Smith;the moody,world-weary hit-man in 'The Hit';the irascible, frustrated "Control" in 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Trevor Broom in 'Hellboy'. I'd like to have seen him in 'Krapp's Last Tape'. I heard it was great.

A lesser-know role in 'The Osterman weekend'

A sad loss.

I know he's been in great film roles, but his greatest attribute was his voice and I liked him the best when he voiced that dragon in the BBC's Merlin tv series.

Lovely man. Met him a few times due to being friends with a friend of a friend i.e. being in Ireland.
