But wasn't he in government for the last 5 years?
Yep, but he in Opposition now, so normal grandstanding and populism can be resumed.

Whereas the amateurs in the Green Party will be doing what exactly? It's a wonder that Kelly didn't plug himself for such a lofty position.

Alan Kelly - didn't he used to be the Minister for the Environment?

Wouldn't 6 weeks ago, when he was still a real minister, have been a better time to say this?

Read the story - he said it as a real minister at the real UN representing Ireland today signing a real international agreement on our behalf

Interesting comments on climate from Kelly who is in New York to sign the climate agreement
Alan Kelly: Ireland must face up to its climate change obligations

Also calls for all government actions to be climate proofed
Sounds sensible to me.

A Minister for Climate Change is in the Fianna Fail manifesto, and no one made giog nor niog of protest about it during the election. All parties support adapting our country to climate change as far as we can, and mitigating it as much as we can.

Climate change policies before the election:

One striking thing (except for the inconsequential Wallyhamic branch of UKIP based in Ballyjamesduff), no Irish political party of any stripe embraces climate change denial. Indeed, nor does any single candidate, independent or otherwise, hold with this lunatic fringe cult. I have heard of none, but I might be wrong.

A UCD lecturer Cara Augustenborg (formerly of the Greens) has audited the party manifestos.

All the political parties contesting the general election have included climate change policies in their manifestos, all committing to the targets set out by the Paris agreement. However there are nuances. She rates them as follows.

  1. Green Party (not without criticism);
  2. Labour;
  3. Social Democrats;
  4. Fianna Fáil;
  5. Fine Gael;
  6. Renua;
  7. Sinn Féin;
  8. People Before Profit

You can read the details, here. I was most surprised by Fianna Fail, the highest-placed conservative party:

Fianna Fáil
The party has a surprisingly good manifesto, says Dr Augustenborg. Its big initiative is a specific department of climate change, incorporating energy, transport and flood defences. The party is strong on electric vehicles with four specific incentives. There is strong resistance to wind energy.

#ge16: Which parties have best climate-change policies?

Election 2016 Climate Manifesto Analysis - Cara Augustenborg
No party or independent campaigned on a platform of climate change denial, so it would be stupidly disingenuous to start doing so now.

It is a striking characteristic of Irish Republic politics (and of Scotland) that we are spared the lunatic cult of climate change denial, unlike the UK (where it is weak), Australia, Canada and the US. IN Northern Ireland, Sammy Wilson of the DUP did embrace it, but does he count for much any more?

Read the story? You must be joking. These lads have to have their outrage first, then their rant and by the time they are finished they are so far up their own holes they don't know what's going on.

It's so easy to step into I am progressive play-act.

Alan Kelly the neo liberal in the Labour party is okay because he wants to have a climate change minister. That Labour Party are fairly radical and maybe with Alan Kelly in charge we could see real progress.

How easily manipulated are people that it only takes a climate change minister lark to have Kelly a hero.

Kelly is hardly a "hero" to be doing something proposed by Fianna Fail.

This could be just "greenwashing" to impress the UN and the Greens - come back in a year or two to find out if he deserves to be called a hero.

Just a wee technical point, aren't labour still part of the 'acting' government and therefore not in opposition? I could be wrong, I'm not totally au fait with the legal niceties of the present situation.

There is an opportunity for the Green party to put forward rational arguments in favour of energy conservation as part of the climate change argument. It makes economic sense to cut down on energy use. Gormley did more for climate change by introducing new building regulations than any number of windmill conmen but its not sexy enough, there is an opportunity but our politicians are in thrall to a media who are just too dumb to understand paragraphs with more than 2 bullet points.

The caretaker govt can sign off on non contentious issues like parking restrictions in Mullingar but they can't change direction, the permanent govt rules until the Dail puts someone else in charge.

A minister for climate change (or is global warming)based on a total fraudulent science based on rubbish climate models.No thanks. Greatest modern day hoax pushed on mankind in the push for a global controlled green derivative ponzi scheme for nations to further enslave humanity.

Whatever but as a country which imports most of our fuel, it makes sense to reduce our use. The best way is through redeuced use and one of the best ways is through improving insulation standards. Its not sexy but its the old argument about the best way to eat an elephant, one bite at a time.
