Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said the ERHA was warned of sub-standard conditions in Leas Cross Nursing Home ten months before the RTÉ Prime Time investigation was broadcast.

Mr Kenny described the Leas Cross scandal as social savagery and he criticised the HSE for failing to take action against the owners of the nursing home despite numerous warnings in the preceding year.

Yesterday the HSE blamed system failures for the situation that arose in the Leas Cross Nursing Home and said that, following the Prime Time investigation, they immediately moved to rectify the situation.

Mr Kenny said that inspectors were well aware of the conditions in the nursing home as early as August 2004.

He quoted directly from a letter sent to the ERHA by a healthcare management consultant outlining conditions he witnessed in the nursing home.

The author of the letter is Martin Hynes, who carried out an independent investigation into the death of former Leas Cross patient Peter McKenna.

During his visit to Leas Cross, Mr Hynes was accompanied by an inspector from the Health Board.

Mr Hynes also disputes the claims by the HSE that there is a robust system of inspections now in place.

- This is ridicoulas that they could try and play dumb, now we know what type of cover up merchants we have running things in our health service

To be honest this is not about politics, but we can not change the system
Though but What does IRISH people feel about seing their parent in
OLD PEOPLES home and discovered that their bottom is actually rotten
Up with sores :?:

Well i think actions is now speaking rather than vioces so the struggle
Continues.

The PDs obviously want to turn Ireland into a single party government where no acountability exists and where all political opponents are shouted down.

The HSE has clealry become an entity designed to protect the Minister for Health's ass. Any cock-up in the health service becomes "a matter for the HSE".

F**k that!

This Goverment is a disgrace. But the PDs are its worst component. Watchdogs? More like a sneaky weasal interested in nothing but snide, underhand political point-scoring.

I sure hope the electorate see through them this time and consign them to the history books.

the attitude of the pd moron on this thread is telling. he says that once a scandal breaksthe opposition should just shut up about it

well at least we know that the next government, whoever it is, is going to have an easy ride from whatever is left of the pds on the opposition benches

Gentle reminder from eight years ago:

Rinse, repeat.

Leas Cross - who is responsible? - irishhealth.com

"Health Minister Mary Harney, responding to the O'Neill report, said the deficiencies in care for older people described in the report are deeply upsetting.

The HSE says is has received a number of individual complaints about Leas Cross and is dealing with these individually.

Clients/relatives who wish to discuss any aspect of their care or any point arising from the report are asked to contact the HSE's information line at 1850 24 1850."
