Released: Brian Lenihan

Lenihan's letter to seek outside help has been released. It is extraordinary and he acknowledges we no longer had the confidence of the markets where we could borrow money. It probably does not tell us a lot we did not know already, and we shall have to see what pressures were put on Lenihan to go this road, we are led to believe that Trichet was putting pressure on the government, and this may be correct as Taoiseach seems to be using this matter as a negotiating tool. But had Cowen and Lenihan any alternative really but to seek basil out, we had lost confidence of ther markets, and even if they gave us money it would be at huge extortionist rates.
Final capitulation ?

Was it not true?

Seems pointless to talk about it being "extraordinary" and a "final capitulation" if it was. Just reality...

Excellent. So, there's a 3 page letter from Lenihan to the ECB President to be released later today. This was in response to Trichet's "threat" letter. When are we going to see the "threat" letter?

That must exist too, as present government are using that so we can be treated better now. But maybe they saw the writing on the wall when we would not, but others will say they had different interests at heart !

Last line of Lenihan's letter - "we will cooperate fully" must be akin to what leaders in Austria, Hungary, Czeckoslavakia said when they sought outside help.

At least it was 100% recycled paper. The Greens were happy.
Actually Eamon Ryan was down i Mayo the night of the guarantee, meeting Shell to Sea protesters, and Gormley was asleep in bed, and did not answer phone. A Garda called to him to tell him the good news !

And the "infamous letter", the one that should be in the public domain will be released by Enda when exactly?

Meehaul Martin took a cell phone call at JFK airport for a few minutes about it, no doubt he had wonderful words of wisdom to offer, like " Ok Boss"

And Hanafin claims that the "Tuesday night" meeting was actually held on Sunday Morning. I can understand some of the drunks in that Cabinet not knowing what day of the week, but to mix up night and day, well, what can you say?

and in view of later events, we have to ask what condition Cowen was in.
this thread is about seeking the bail out, but I suppose all are related though, guarantee, bail out, Anglo etc..

That letter is almost as significant as the 1916 declaration.

Regards...Bertie
Bertie,
It is an inverse version.
You helped to bring it all about. You wanted a gigantic monument so that the Irish people would be able to express a debt of gratitude to you. Now all they had is a gigantic debt, and loads of useless monuments.

Freedom is over. Until we wipe the slate clean, and default.

Instead of signing off 'Yours Faithfully' it should have read ' Your humble and obedient servant' ... that would have been more honest!
