I happened to hear Leo Varadkar's speech to the FG conference. It was a wide ranging speech but I was immediately struck by one claim he made. He claimed Ireland was the first country to leave the British Empire in 1921. However that claim is not accurate. Ireland remained a part of the Empire even after the inauguration of the Free State.

I can be accused of pedanticism on this point but IMO the Taoiseach of the country ought to be more careful with facts when making his speeches.

We did it in 1921, when we became independent and we were the first country to leave the Empire.

Leo will be remembered as the guy who stood idly by while the island was partitioned for the second time in a century

He also said the country became a republic in 1948. Which is when it was described as a republic. It had been a Republic since 1937 (even if the term was not used in the constitution).

King was head of state till 1948. Cant be a republic with a foreign monarch as head of state.

So the party whose founders fought for our independence, the party who secured our independence, and who left the Commonwealth, are the "party of Empire"???

Some people really are spectacularly ignorant.

There was a time FF were only too happy to beat FG for their conciliatory attitude to the London government. While adopting that same approach in government yourselves.

Has FF finally given this up along with wrapping the Green Flag around ye's when it suited. Are you prepared to acknowledge there really isn't any difference between the two main parties. Or at least hasn't been since the end of WWII. Same policy on the North, same policy on the EU and Foreign Policy generally, provision of public services, serving the same vested interest groups in town and country.

Indeed they are ...you for starters ....

FG had nothing to do with the fight for Independence and played no role in securing it ......... FFS!

Talk about myopic moronic deluded revisionism

Hardly!

It shows neither he nor his script writer

- have a clue about Irish History!

Suggested Christmas Gift for Leo [no socks please!]:

He can borrow Endas copy ...following the joke of putting Redmond front and central in collage green for 1916 ....an event he repudiated , instead preferring that even more young Irishmen would die on the fields of Flanders for empire ...so what his connection with 1916 was , only Enda knows

Historical ignorance is rampant in FG ......because factual history doesn't paint them in a very good light

“What we’re not going to do is to design a border for the Brexiteers because they’re the ones who want a border. It’s up to them to say what it is, say how it would work.." LV
Swapping 'British Government' for 'Brexiteers' isn't going to help.
Is he waiting 'til ROI is presented with a fait accompli!

Like most of the (incredibly stupid) mainstream ...he's waiting to do what Merkel and Macron tell him

Then in about 5 years there'll be much lamenting and gnashing of teeth when it discovered that , just like the Euro Bank bailout , the bill for Brexit will be paid by the Irish republic and its citizens ..........

And we'll deserve it for our sycophancy and stupidity ..........

While Leo was of course extremely wrong, its good to see him actually say something vaguely pro-Irish for a change rather than his tory boy, pro-British posturing particularly in regard to the North of Ireland.

Although in hindsight his remarks were probably meant as a mournful lament
