A devastating form of attack, why is it increasing?

Woman and her cousin badly hurt after random acid attack on her 21st birthday | Metro News

comments section- 'Metropolitan Police figures from March show attacks involving corrosive fluids in London jumped 74% from 261 in 2015 to 454 in 2016 — a huge spike from 166 in 2014. Across Britain, such attacks increased 30% between 2012 and 2015, according to the London Times.

"It’s a growing problem, there’s no question," said Jaf Shah, executive director of Acid Survivors Trust International, a London charity that supports victims, predominantly in South Asia, where acid attacks are more common.

In Britain, young men are mainly targeting other young men in violence that is often gang-related.'

A staggering 1500 acid attacks occurred in London from 2011 to 2016.

And the number is rising.

It really is one of the most wicked and evil things that can be done to a human being.

In addition to being disfigured, the victim can end up either partially or totally blind, for life.

Where do they get the acid?
Going by reports, they can just buy it over the counter.

TBH, if you're full of enough hatred and are barbaric enough, you'll find stuff under the kitchen sink that can inflict horrible injuries - like bleach or some of those super-duper-dissolve-all-stains-in-two-minutes cleaners.

You are correct that some cleaners can be quite nasty. But of course they are not really comparable to sulphuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, etc. That will not just 'dissolve all stains', it will dissolve your carpet! And if you use it upstairs... it will dissolve the downstairs carpet too, literally!

You can buy 97% Sulphuric Acid in any hardware or builders merchant - it's used for freeing blocked drains. You can also but caustic soda(sodium hydroxide) for paint stripping, drain cleaning etc. Either will melt the skin off your face in seconds.

They probably need to restrict the sale of those - requiring a license would be a good start.

Would be pointless - people are carrying out attacks with knives, cars, and anything else that serves. We would eventually end up banning everything that isn't soft and fluffy. Any decent second-level chemistry student can mix up a very potent acid from common household ingredients in a few minutes.

Woman who threw acid in best friend's face jailed for 12 years
Konye was jealous of her friend's good looks and secretly plotted to hurt the Victoria's Secret worker in revenge after Miss Oni allegedly called her "ugly", the court had been told.

She said to another friend: "I'm going to mess up the one thing that girl has - her looks."

After the attack in Dagenham, east London, on December 30, 2012, Konye even texted Miss Oni to express sympathy for her injuries.

Horrific attacks which need to be firmly dealt with. Like syringe attacks in Dublin some years back, if a nasty attack method like this is left unchecked it gains currency and traction. If it is made clear to the participants that it will be dealt with severely then it declines.
No doubt the Met will investigate it and then go back to worrying about what words it can use in day to day language without offending people.
