Anyone know how this is going to work ?

When I heard they were getting rid of those hated toll booths I thought it was going to be free - I forgot for one minute that this is the ultimate rip off republic ! How do you pay if there's no barriers ? Will it be like the congestion zone in London where you've got to pay online or by 'phone using your credit card ? ? How will they get all the knackers to pay ? ? ?

Why dont they just fill the road with advertising, the amount of traffic flowing through because it was made free would mean that the road could still make money .

Well, what a lot of people don't realise is that barrier free tolling is congestion charging, but they haven't told people that though. If there was no tolling on the M50 how much extra traffic would use the M50 every day I wonder? If there are no barriers it should mean that the traffic will move a lot more smoothly in future though. I can see in the future that road pricing will become an important part of government revenue. Trials have already started in the Uk the other day,(Manchester I think) charging people by how many miles they drive in their car. The same will probably happen here eventually. The barrier free tolling is a test run for this.

Doubtful. I don't know about you but I tend to look where I am going whilst driving, not at all the pretty adverts.

NRA expecting ‘teething’ problems on barrier-free M50:

The National Roads Authority has admitted that it expects "teething" problems with the new barrier free tolling system on the M50.

The new system is due to come into effect in 10 days' time, but it will take another eight or nine weeks before the existing West Link toll plaza is dismantled and a new layout is in place.

During that period, speed and lane restrictions will be in operation.

The NRA says the new system is very complex and will there will inevitably be difficulties while people get used to it.

The authority is asking motorists to be patient and tolerant while everyone gets familiar with the changes.

Oh joy

Will they be as tolerant if I don't pay?

Someone should have told FF that when they decided to stick 'sculptures' on the side of the road, like a coloured spikey things and hideous paintings.

You're dead right about that. I live not too far from the coloured spiky thing. It is bloody hideous.

I have read the papers and googled it ! - I still can't find anything that tells me how it's going to work !
What about foreign registered cars ? What about hire cars ?

You can't have it both ways - You say it's ludicrously complex and yet suggest that it's simple to understand ! I've read the papers and still haven't a clue how it's going to work ! .

Foreign cars go free at the moment. I imagine hire companies will pass on the fees/fines to your credit card as they do for other things like speeding fines.

there were ads in the papers and countless countless articles explaining the various options from the various companies. You can basically either pre-pay or pay after online, in certain shops or by phone. The complexity is not in the methodology but in the plethora of service providers with waaay too many options (it makes mobile phone billing seem simple) and pricing structures.

What about people who are just going up to Dublin for 1 day (say driving to the airport). Will there still be a way to pay by cash?

They have a EUR1 per month account charge ... that means that you can't just setup an account once and then just use the tag once or twice a year.

Indeed, but having already paid for the M50 in my taxes, including the extra lanes, so twice in my taxes, I am not a fan of being ripped off ad infinitum by this. I have actively avoided (not to bad to do if you time yourself well) the M50 and the East link as I refuse to pay for a non-existent service.

This is another Irish mess - Are we trying to be the laughing stock of Europe ? !

When I go on business trips overseas I often get an Avis hire car that I drop off at Dublin Airport. How the feck am I supposed to pay this bloody toll before 8PM the following day when I'm on a jet heading to The Far East or Australia ? ? .
:?

Irish Gombeen Government strikes again ! :x And why on earth should Johnny Foreigner not have to pay this toll ? ! - It's bad enough that as it is they're not paying road tax and their rusty crocks are not tested ! :x
It's an absolute disgrace ! . :x
