Hitting the media on a slow news day by the looks of things is this story:

Earth

Scientists say there are signs that Earth’s magnetic poles could be about to flip for the first time in 786,000 years – and the ‘switch’ could have drastic effects on our electronic world.

The usual range of exotic theories and predictions follow. NASA yawn at the prospect:

But I was wondering what level of dependence their is on navigation systems, auto-pilots etc. to magnetic readings. I imagine most have shifted to GPS today, but presumably there are some around. At the very least, you will need to be careful reading and plotting off your compass when you go sailing. But an autopilot or plotter systems with compass inputs could be a problem.

When it happens is one thing, true, but it also matters whether any of the "signs" can cause the sorts of electrical problems that people are predicting.

If nothing is detectable until they actually flip, then yes it could well be a geological time frame, like for earthquakes. So, one of these centuries now.

The ar5e would fall out of the homing pigeon industry. For a while at least. Who knows what the knock-on effects of that could be.

There's no worry. There won't be a sudden 'switch'.

The Magnetic North is always drifting.

Currently it's drifting toward Siberia at the rate of about 40km a year.

The term Pole-Reversal describes a situation where the Magnetic Pole which is currently in the Northern Hemisphere and as it happens, is presently only around 2,800 km from the Geographic North Pole - has drifted into the Southern
Hemisphere.

It's not inverting though. And magnetic drift is easily predicted and adjusted. All nautical charts include adjustment factors to calculate true North.

Would be the first time in ages that Arctic Terns turn around on their migration between poles. Be a hoor if they were almost there, though, wouldn't it?

It seems the magnetic switch is long over due, yellow stone eruption long over due , San Andreas big one long over due and other volcanos , earthquakes ect. Daily Mail has a article weekly of some cautionary world ended events that are long over due. I’m sure when the big event happens it will be the one event we weren’t warned about weekly .
