That puts him as a bigger mass murderer, albeit through much incompetence than Hitler and Stallin put together!

In China, they say he was 20% bad, and 80% good (that's almost the official line, I believe).

Horrifying to think that the "20%" was 45 million people.
70/30 actually.

Rather makes Fergus Finlay's decision to quote the guy recently, in reference to his seeking the Presidency, look even more foolish.

And people say socialism achieves nothing.
Has the private sector ever killed that many in such a short time frame?

Indeed, you're dead right, Deng Xiaoping said that, but a colleague of mine in China used the 80% line.

I wonder does it suggest that the general public do not feel quite confident to be as critical of Mao as some of the reform-minded leadership have been.

Deng did, after all, have a personal axe to grind with Mao!

There are times when I wish there were a hell. Eternity on gas mark 5 would be fitting.

Question is how do we prevent people like this rising to positions of power. Looking around the world it hardly encourages optomism.

ww1 did about the same. Oh that's right- when a communist government does bad things, that means communism is evil; when a capitalist government does bad things, that means nothing.

No, no - capitalism is defending 'freedom' and 'democracy'.

The total number of people killed during WW1 (including civilians) is 16.5 million. But no one person can held responsible for those deaths. Communism throws up mass-murderers wherever it is tried. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Mengistu Haile Mariam in Ethiopia (estimates that a total of half a million people were killed during the Red Terror of 1977 and 1978) In Noth Korea the bloody slaughter continues. All over the world whatever the claim or the intention Communism in power means mass murder.

Yes unbelievable isn't it, 45 million dead through starvation from the 'Great Leap Forward' there's another review of the book here: Mao's Great Famine by Frank Dikötter | Book review | Books | The Observer

I read it the other week and meant to post it off to the head of the Mao chain of restaurants. I always thought it was in bad taste to call the restaurant that, but particularly so in this context.
If it was only through starvation then they missing out the millions he slaughtered while sitting back and doing zilch against the Japanese.

Firstly - only Lenin was a communist - and you can produce some evidence that he was a mass murderer.

Secondly - do you seriously want me to list all that mass murderers that weren't 'communist' ?

Thats an old communist trick. Lenin and Trotsky were equally as muderous as Stalin albeit on a smaller scale. In fairness to Lenin he worked out very quickly that communism didn't work and started back tracking before he died and introduced market reforms.

Maybe a bit of evidence for this wouldn't go astray either.

And where are the right-wing acknowledgements of non-'communist' mass murder - I'll hold my breath.

LOL!

The international Communist movement barely exists in Europe....Yet you still feel the need to come out with such waffle....The spectre still haunts your dreams turning them into nightmares even now....
