Looks like SF have made a nice PC appointment.

a chara,

Michelle O’Neill has been appointed by the party to take up the position of party leader in the North and this will be announced at 2pm this afternoon at an event in the Long Gallery in Stormont. Despite all the media speculation, we would ask that you keep the information confidential until that time.

Michelle is a long standing member of the party, has been an MLA in the Assembly since 2007 and held the positions of Minister for Agriculture and Health. She is also a member of the Ard Chomhairle and part of our negotiations team.

We have done an interview with Michelle which will go up on facebook and the party’s website at 2pm, similar to that done with Martin McGuinness last week. At the same time holding the event at the Long Gallery in Stormont, which will be attended by party activists, MLAs and TDs and will be chaired by Mary Lou McDonald and addressed by Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness and Michelle O’Neill.

We will circulate the interview and Michelle’s keynote address at 2pm and ask that you share the video on social media.

Is mise,

Dawn Doyle

She has very little "presence" compared to Mary Lou, let alone Gerry and Martin.
She reads from scripts, badly.
She's obviously too young to have been member/volunteer - does she have any half decent record that she's sound?

Apart from that, best of luck to her.

Good stuff.
It's great to see young talent at the helm of the fastest growing political party in Ireland.

All eyes will be on Coco. I bet there will be other eyes there too - those of the Army Council (and their MI6 mates). Adams has politically shafted a lot of people, from Ivor Bell and Billy McKee to Slab Murphy. Michelle better sign the tune.

Why appointed instead of elected?

I suspect nepotism as being a factor.

Is Michelle O'Neill related to P. O'Neill ?

Shes an very astute choice actually. MON has no baggage and doesnt spook Unionist voters in the way Conor Murphy does, for example. Shes also very popular with farmers - no dont laugh that really counts in NI. In DARD, she was responsible for the rural development programme and single farm payments and the conclusion was she knew how to work them :)

Basically she's Simon Coveney, to Conor Murphy's Leo Varadaker.

Is it just me, or do SF struggle with that word?

A changing of the Guard for Sinn Fein . Its time for that change and I hope that Sinn Fein are not going to present Gerry Adams as leader at another general election .

Liadh Ní Riada, Lynn Boylan, Martina Anderson , Mary Lou and now Michelle O'Neil coming to prominence. Sinn Fein are doing a fine job in promoting women in politics.

its more that shes a contrast to Arlene Foster, actually.
How come she was appointed instead of elected? Either by the membership or the Stormont MLAs? Kind of odd for a party which is fond of its self image as a grass roots organisation. MLMD certainly got quite tetchy at the suggestion that she may be appointed leader in the This Week programme yesterday.
