Martin McGuinness is to resign as Deputy First Minister this afternoon. Calling for elections as soon as possible.

So the joint First Minister of the six counties is standing down.

Can't see this ending well for the DUP.

With the reduction in seats (iirc 19 less mla's) it's likely all party's will lose seats...

This marks a turning point. He was seen as the really militant one in the SF leadership during the Troubles but he became the post "Peace making" one in the period following the GFA. Given the way demographics are going the DUP and UUP have been playing a very dangerous game indeed.

Arlene looks terrified.

Still, it shows one thing. There is no way Stormont could have just shrugged off Cash for Ash, as a bit of local bother.

Only partisans dont understand what happened there.

Any word on the ground from Unionist areas as to how this issue is playing there?

The letter of resignation makes clear SF won't be nominating a successor - we will have elections 6 weeks from now.

The letter also makes clear that a fundamental change in attitude has occurred within SF. No return to the status quo means negotiations on power sharing.

Right in time for brexit - England's difficulty...

Translates as after running around like headless chickens and changing our minds umpteen times we are going to do what we slagged the proddies of for threatening to do and call another fecking pointless election...
