It is reported in yesterday's newspapers and on Journal.ie that former Progressive Democrat leader Mary Harney has been appointed as Chancellor of the University of Limerick and chairperson of its governing body

It is not clear in what way this former politician might be considered qualified for the role as chancellor of a university or to be chair of the governing body of a university. Nor is it clear who exactly appointed her and what selection process was involved.

Ireland's universities are a law onto themselves - is there any link between the fact they honour failed ex-politicians yet never get brought to account by current politicians?

Makes a change for someone who is not a Lefty to get a university position. On the other hand I wouldnt like to see US style political appointees becoming the norm in Irish universities.

Have you heard of Ed Walsh, the first President of UL?

Pinochet would have thought him a bit right-wing and authoritarian.

Someone with huge experience at governing gets asked to chair a board of governors. What were they thinking?

Actually, hang on... What was the OP thinking?

Same sort of carry on in the UK - celebrities and out of office politicians get a nice sinecure.

She gave offence to the oppressed Catholic people of Northern Ireland. The universities of Eire are no business of mine. If she is good enough for the people of Eire, that is their business. I hope the job will keep her too busy to interfere in Northern Ireland affairs.

Mary Harney was a member of the most toxic government in our history (and that's same something considering the one we have now).

She sacrificed her own party to stay at the trough and watched as her cabinet colleagues gutted the economy.

Her little "gaffe" in the Dail allowed Haughey walk free from any prosecution.

During her various terms in office she further destroyed the HSE based on her obsession for a private health system and the "free" market while sunning herself on yachts belonging to people benefiting from this free market.

She enjoyed all the trappings of royalty on FAS trips during the dying days of the Ahern "empire".

Harney would have better served the state by disappearing under a rock. UL appointing her as Chancellor (IMHO) is an insult to everyone who pays tax, has been impacted by the depression or whoever has queued for public health services.

Did UL name the "School of Business" after a left wing TD who was incapable of putting together a coherent sentence ?

[ Still Belfield have the Denis O'Brien centre of Science - I suppose having a centre of tax named after him was probably a bit much ].
