Someone with huge experience at governing gets asked to chair a board of governors. What were they thinking?

How will she fit in commandeering Air Corps aircraft to open off licences?
That was not abuse of power.

That was ABUSE OF AN AIRCRAFT :)

maybe the students should think of protesting this disgraces appointment?
surely a failure like her shouldn't be in a role of such importance.

Well during the boom a few 'university' Bosses jointly scribbled a letter, saying that they should be remunerated along the lines of the Irish based CEOs of major multinationals here, which was according to them around €300K.
Also one of them rather famously said it was very difficult to live on his salary of slightly over €200K in this country!

I wonder will her appointment, given her ministerial experience etc. lead to a huge jump in rankings for this 'university'?

It dosen't do their credibility a lot of good in fairness. I would consider her to be a disgraced politician because she was a key enabler of Fianna Fail during their worst excesses which destroyed our economy.

Obviously Harney has many skills.
She was appointed a minister at a very young age and also co-founded a new Irish political party that governed and had moderate success.
In addition she was also Tanaiste IINM.

Irrespective of her political views these are no mean achievements and I wish her every success as University Chancellor.
But even given those achievements, how do they dovetail with becoming chancellor of a university, exactly?

Same sort of carry on in the UK - celebrities and out of office politicians get a nice sinecure.
Will Clegg become boss of bosses at The LSE or Oxbridge?
Possibly!

Harvey was one of the most effective ministers for health,.
With her co-location policy, she would have furthered enshrined the 2 tier healthcare system, which is a massive issue!

Will she introduce some form of private 3rd level institution co-location initiative there?

In the current climate, would her gender have been a factor at all in securing this post?

Could be interesting at senior level meetings at the University of Limerick. Listening to Ms Harney repeatedly saying every agenda item 'is a matter for the HSE'.
