Mattie McGrath, Martin Mansergh, and Cromwell...

Weird story. First, Mattie McGrath decided that Cowen and Ahern were 'worse then Cromwell' for what they had done to the country. Then Tipp running mate Lady Mansergh himself said that was nonsense. And now, apparently, it emerges that Mansergh's ancestor was granted lands by Cromwell himself during the ethnic cleansing...

Mr Mansergh publicly criticised Mr McGrath's remarks during a debate in the Dail on the national recovery plan.

Cromwell is one of the most infamous figures in Irish history but Mr Mansergh can trace his ancestry back to Bryan Mansergh, who directly benefited from Oliver Cromwell's 'to Hell or Connaught' policy.

Following Cromwell's bloody invasion in 1649, Bryan Mansergh was given ownership of Ballybur Castle in Cuffesgrange, Co Kilkenny, and surrounding lands. The previous owner, John Comerford, was banished to Connaught in 1654.

Mr Mansergh said last night: "I don't think the validity of the point I made in a very moderate fashion was in any way affected by the nature of my ancestry."

Pity poor Mr. Comerford for not respecting his betters at the time..

McGrath was standing by his comments last night.

If Mattie feels so strongly about the leadership of FF being as bad as Cromwell will he vote against the unfair budget their proposing....?

Time to walk the walk Mattie....or will he sprout the usual 'national interest ' nonsense...?

Mattie has been roaring in the local papers this week about running as an Indo in the upcoming election... He's gone off the deep end if you ask me..

McGrath must be bricking it about his seat if he is launching into these kind of hystrionics.

I think he's safe anyway, having made a big noise about the rights of his constituents to breed dogs etc.. ( and losing the party whip )

He's positioned himself well with good old fashioned FF opposition in government

Expect others to now do the same, it is every man for himself at this point. It'll be funny to see - I wonder will a **** crow after they deny being followers of FF on the doorsteps...

Ireland is the only country in the world where politicians try to score points over someones ancestory 400 yrs ago. Talk about an inward looking country. The Fianna Fail mentality, Gombeenism, parochialism, nepotism are all aspects of this.

Ahh, so the sins of the ancestors carry through the generations ... at what point did you forego your Irishness to become Klingon ?

Isn't it funny how the FF'ers usually invoke Cromwell when referring to some massive act of injustice against Ireland.

Noel Dempsey hypocritically railed against the bankers, saying they had done more damage to Ireland than Oliver Cromwell. ( when really it was his party doing the damage ).

That story about Bertie asking Robin Cook to remove the portrait of Cromwell is another case in point.

Like Ahern was such a patriotic Irish Republican that he might tear it down in a fit righteous anger. Playing to the gallery the whole time, the filthy corrupt traitor.

As opposed to the U.S., where they'll score points off you if your father was Kenyan. Or the U.K., where they'll score points off you if your father was a Baronet. Or any country in the Middle East, where the choices made by a random ancestor 1500 years previously means the difference between being a guy in a tank, or the guy being crushed by the tank.

Pu-ny Hu-mans. You are all Doomed.
