The family of missing English girl Madeline McCann are to sue a portuguese police officer. The police officer allegedly stated that Madeline was dead and that the parents were involved in concealing her body:

The parents of Madeleine McCann are to sue former Portuguese police detective Goncalo Amaral for defamation, according to their spokesman.

He said Kate and Gerry McCann are to take action over "entirely unfounded and grossly defamatory claims".

Mr Amaral led the inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine, but was removed from the case in October 2007.

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was three when she vanished from the Algarve holiday flat on 3 May 2007.

In a statement, the parents of the missing girl said: "We - together with our three children Madeleine, Sean and Amelie - are taking this legal action against Goncalo Amaral over his entirely unfounded and grossly defamatory claims."

"[They were] made in all types of media, both within Portugal and beyond - that Madeleine is not only dead, but that we, her parents, were somehow involved in concealing her body."

Suggestions that they were involved appear to be unfounded and therefore out of order. However, it always amazes how more questions have not been raised about their parenting on the night in question. I think that if a poor, working class family had gone socialising leaving their children unattended, then they would have been facing serious allegations of neglect.

Kate McCann should go away and be grateful that the Portugese forensics team made so many boo boos

Ms McCann should go quitely into the dark night

She will have great difficulty living with herself

She has given up her GP slot

it is eating her up, what she did

I was walking up to DCU a couple of days ago and among all the mess of posters for various election i saw a Madeline McCann poster with something like "2 years since MCCann went missing.. Defend the family!".. or some such.

Missing white girl syndrome. I really just dont get how the public let themselves get so personally involved in it.

The family should keep their heads down... They could still get charged with neglect over this.

Get real for the love of god parents leave their children unattended any number of times. What i think is disgusting is that because they weren't somehow impoverished suddenly many people tried to turn this into a class issue. At the end of the day a child went missing no evidence exists to implicate the parents, suggesting otherwise is just plain wrong.

Id like to think most parents dont leave their kids unattended while they go out for dinner.Especially while in a foreign country.Just because some people do it doesnt make it right. Has an actual investigation in to a case neglect been conducted by the portguese authorities?

The class issue arises because its 2 middle class people who neglected their kid and she went missing. Had it been from a poorer economic background the perception is that people wouldnt have been as understanding and there wouldnt have been this mass hyesteria over it. In short, These are people we should stereotypically like therefore we are more sympathetic.

Beyond involuntarily faciliating the abduction i dont think the MCCanns were involved in the dissappearance but i do think there should be a proper investigation of them.unfortunatly politically speaking that is not possible.

A couple of weeks ago a photofit of what Madeline would look like now, was released.

I cant understand how anyone believes this little girl is still alive and will be found.

For Madelines sake, I hope she had a speedy death-RIP.

Thats true, Im glad to say.

I cant understand how these so called parents are still touring the world giving interviews on prime time TV.

I sensed from day one that the parents were withholding some information.

thats why they have to go trotting, they have to play up the 'fact' that they are still 'looking' for Madeline

If they 'knew' she was dead, that would imply they know more than they said.

A sickening charade, I think Gerry will tire of it soon enough, Kate is 'cracking' and has quit practising

Time and Guilt.....

They are coining in the spondoolies created by the Maddy circus. Books, interview fees, chat show appearance fees etc.
One of them was undoubtedly responsible for the poor girl's demise and the other for aiding and abetting the disposal of the body and cleaning of a crime scene - they missed the blood in the car mind.

Is that true? I am not familiar with the case. There was something about the way the media handled it that may me shy away from it.

Either an overdose or a sedative, the lass was well out of it, tried to get out of bed and fell, hitting her head. They found blood in the apartment and the boot of the hire car.

I want to know why they didn't get a nanny when they were out socialising. The American media would not give them the free pass on that question.

The resort offered a baby sitting service. They could have afforded it but chose not too.
