Media hype for reckless spending to mollify every vested interest now is the same as support for reckless spending in Celtic tiger times

Media hype for reckless spending to mollify every vested interest now is the same as support for reckless spending in Celtic tiger times

During the boom a small number of celebrities in powerful positions in charge of government and lending institutions were the toast of the media.

Our problems derive from back then when these same celebrities were making decisions which eventually led to the bankrupting of the country and a bailout in 2010.

All of which the ordinary citizens have been paying for ever since and will continue to pay for.

Government is still spending billions more than it is getting in tax and borrowing levels are little less than 100% of GDP.

Was the media hype [ala the celtic tiger hype] during the election for a return to the celtic tiger policies which bankrupt the country irresponsible?

Now as a result of the election hype and in addition to being recently bankrupt and currently overborrowed we are practically ungovernable.

Is the present, continued media clarion call [ala the celtic tiger hype] for every vested interest's demands on the taxpayer to be satisfied continuing the irresponsibility?

Can you give a few examples of the similarities?

The crash was caused by the bursting of a property bubble and hugely exacerbated by prior "benchmarking".

I don't see media lionising property developers and bankers again, nor calling for big public sector pay increases.

Not to say there aren't numerous groups out looking for their cut, but I don't see it as particularly media-driven.

Give us goodies as successful political strategy shocker. Sad individual stories sells papers. Throw the two together and voila. Media become hysterical at the notion of a lefty money tree strategy whilst blithely ignoring the right leaning money tree strategy. Media's job is to sell their priduct/agenda, nothing more.

I have a life.
It seems like that is what we do...elect the same mindset that will always look after themselves first and therefore create the fodder for the media...did'nt the Rabbit blame the media for creating the cynicism around politics, but he never mentioned the disgusting habits of the oirish political class.

We are not capable of governing ourselves because the mistakes and the bad decision makers are always at the top and refuse to make the necessary changes. Are the rabbits going to blame the media for the carry on of the clowns in the 'water talks'. My God but if you were'nt cynical before about oirish politics you sure are now. We are been treated like fools by Fine Fail and Fina Gael at the moment.

The clowns in the big top are getting well paid for a very poor show.

Do we not have someone from every public service, community, profession, commercial organisation etc being given media time day after day to demand that taxpayers' money be spent on their particular project?

Well the water issue is a case in point.

From the far out fascists who commit violence to FF nobody wants to pay for the water/sewage system.

All of those are at least given a free ride and not challenged in our media.

Some of them are celebrities being grovelled to by media that should be holding them to account.

and to think that in the middle of this charade, we are 'celebrating' a fictional independence and supposed 'Sovereignty', while the clowns who sold us out to EU and German bullies continue to draw inflated goodies from the same taxpayers they shafted. Kafka could not conceive of this absurdity!

Why I wonder? :)

This country was bankrupt by the decisions of a small number of its own most powerful citizens during the celtic tiger boom.

That was not due to either the EU or the Germans.

The taxpayers of the countries of the EU subscribed to the 85 bn bailout when we went broke.

True but that's the case in any democracy. In the Celtic Tiger case the deals that stoked the property bubble and public sector pay increases which wrecked us were done behind closed doors and weren't driven by media.

Are you serious?

Quotes from Celtic Tiger media;

'Every day and in every way things are getting better and better'

'There is virtually no downside'

'Spending has risen 79% since 1997'

'Best and most responsible of budgets. Minister passed with flying colours'.

I could go on.

The media, trade unions and civil servants largely escaped the blame for the financial crisis

The Irish media has about the same level of responsibility as a toddler who's been given a chilli enema, dosed up on a combo of speed, LSD, PCP and cocaine ... and hasn't been fed for a day

Reading yesterday's newspapers and listening to and looking at today's RTE's news bulletins shows that they want a return to the celtic tiger government and policies.

Name these celebrities.

I'd also point out that in the view of many on here, water protesters were given anything but a free ride in the media.
