A Bill to cap the amount of a media outlets that one person can own.

The Social Democrats Bill would also be retrospective.

"Speaking ahead of the bill being launched, Murphy said an “ever-increasing proportion of our media outlets” were being concentrated in too few hands.

“This represents a potential threat to a free and open media which facilitates a vigorous democracy,” she said.
Murphy pointed towards international debates and issues around “fake news” as a reason to have a “pluralistic media environment”.

So!
Who's going to oppose it or water it to irrelevancy?

I'll read this later. Fintan's usually on the ball so it should be interesting to hear what he has to say.

I am amazed it was not the law years ago. I remember when there was laws to prevent monopolies in distilling.

It suits FG today, and suited FF before that.

No wonder the Edelman poll recently mentioned in the IT shows Irish trust in media is down to around levels last seen in 2000.
