Police are treating a paint attack on a war memorial in Glenavy, County Antrim, as a hate crime.

The memorial and a number of poppy wreaths at Main Street were covered in navy paint.

It is believed it happened early on Friday morning. Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

I will never understand the mentality of people that attack memorials, halls, clubs or churches.Hopefully the amoeba will be caught and dealt with accordingly.

Indeed, a true lack of dignity and decency here.

Then again, I am a bit liberal, the police should treat it like a child's cry for help and lock the person up in a juvenile detention center, fed mushed up carrots and have scheduled bedtimes until he or she is willing to grow up, whether he's or she's 8 or 68, or put him or her up for adoption.

Ghouls and absolute sectarian hate mongers. Hope they are caught and get the book threw at them.

One question: What does such vandalism achieve? Regardless of what building/monument is attacked, it takes a hate filled individual to do something like that.

I am bemused as to why the police are treating this as a hate crime. Do the PSNI understand what the definition of a 'hate crime' really is?

Hopefully whoever is responsible – irrespective of what side of the community they come from – is reprimanded over this act of thuggery.

technically, are most crimes not hate crimes?

No. A hate crime is a crime were the prime motivating factor is hate, [as in the activities of the Shankill Butchers]. The attack on the monument was senseless vandalism that could have been perpetrated by drunken unionist chavs who care nothing of the sacrafice memorialised in the stone.

Hate Crime

Hate crime is any incident perceived to have been committed against any person or property on the grounds of a particular person’s ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, political opinion or disability.

Yes. They are fully aware of the fact that as members of the PSNI they are by definition "hate criminals", and a law unto themselves at all times.

Children are probably responsible for the vandalism to the memorial. If it was adults with real political motives, they need to examine the contributions Irish Catholics have made to the British Army's war efforts in both world wars.

Yeah, similiarly the adults who have hi-jacked the sacrafice of these men and turned it into a sectarian free-for-all would do well to take note too.

According to their own definition, unless the vandals were Nazi sympathisers then this doesn't fit the criteria of a hate crime.

The only people in Ireland who have tangible links to neo Nazis are unionists. What a blooming irony! ha ha ha ha ha!

One thing is for sure there ain't much repect or love being shown when any monument or hall is attacked. These actions are self repeating and self defeating crimes. Culprits caught and dealt with only way to stop them.
