Michelle Mulherin- the defender of decent sexual practices

It would appear that Michelle Mulherin has again decided to pick up what she perceives as the moral baton and defend the good sexual law abiding citizens of Ireland ( yes my tongue is firmly in my cheek). The attached article describes how she is taking an issue of sexual advice up with the minister for a health. Her outrage appears to emanate from the advice of a youth service to teenagers that they consider threesomes in their sexual relationships as opposed to turning to porn. Michelle isn't happy with this. Mention is also made of the grants which the group avails of.

It raises some interesting issues. Is Mulherin setting herself up as some type of FG version of Mary Whitehouse. is she just a prude, out of touch with what's really going on in sexual Ireland, especially amongst the younger generations ? On the other hand is she correct in her chastisement of such advice?

So is she defender of good sexual practice or an obstacle to sensible recognition of sexual practices at they exist? I guess it's unfair not to give my view. I think she's being very cute and playing to her audience as usual for votes ( well she is a politician). One gets the impression that she wouldn't have been one for allowing the sale of condoms many years ago. I feel it wiser to acknowledge were sexual relationships are now at and then use that base to counter problems in that area. The group in Question have rightly identified the porn industry and access to it by the younger generations as a major problem.they therefore are attempting to use what is now almost acceptable to many to counter the problem. I'd have thought that was good practice as opposed to taking the Mary Whitehouse type stance.

This from the article:

Calling the advice "incredibly regressive", Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin said that she will be raising the issue with Minister for Health James Reilly.

"That this has been given the State seal of approval is very worrying. There is nothing right about this."

Advocating threesomes for 16 yr olds as "exciting" and "fun" seems a bit much, even to this atheist contrarian.

Come back Mary Whitehouse!

Well maybe not, but surely I can't be alone in thinking that an organization which actually encourages teenagers to have group sex with people for whom they have no feelings (I don't know whether they specify that the proposed partners might also have feelings) is not suitable to be allowed contact with teens, much less have some sort of official status?

Or is their explanation that they are only taking account of what kids will see on porn sites anyway, and are actually encouraging caution, a valid one?

i'd save my outrage for the independent that it is still in business.

I cant imagine teenagers take any notice of these "right on" websites , so the fact that they can blag 6 figure sums of the HSE says more about the HSE profligacy

Is she the one was rambling on about "fornication" a while back?

These demented relics of the 1950s should be sniggered at and then ignored. There'll always be a minority constituency of mad auld wans rattling their beads and spouting Catholic gibberish but there's no need to pay any actual attention to them, and certainly not when it comes to setting public policy. Let them rave away in the corner getting happily cross that it's not the 13th century, and just ignore them.

As someone said about FF - you can't stop that minority of inbred lunatics voting FF, but if everyone else simply ignores them then they can't do any more damage. Same with beadrattlers. Both groups have a lot of crossover and probably don't amount to much more than 25% of the electorate. Ostracism is the traditional Irish answer to dangerous loonies.

are people really going to suggest that spending public funds advising 16 yr olds that it is ok to have threesomes, is money well-spent???

Michelle Mulherrin is right.....there isnt a parent in ireland who would give that advice to their children.........this is just a youth-based charity trying to be cool

Spunout.ie is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and the HSE, so should anybody be surprised that their standards are in the gutter?

Seems to be two threads on this - both referring to Mary Whitehouse interestingly.

I'd share the concern. Don't know which is worse the original advice or the "porn" justification. Let them offer their wacky advice all they want, but not funded by the state.

Actually the website makes it clear that the persons should be at or over the age of consent.

I'm pretty liberal, but sex as a recreational pursuit with people you don't care about always seemed crass and prone with emotional and mental-health risks.

Safe sex confines it's remit to sperm and viruses. There is more going on than that. especially amongst kids.

I'm pushing 40, but in my peer group who I've known since college, I would see the lowest self esteem and most abusive relationships amongst the girls who "gave away the goods too soon".

It may be dressed up as Girl power or liberation, or feminist empowerment, but the intellectual musings of the sisterhood may be "missed" by a young person.

Threesomes ? When I was 16 it was a major achievement to get even one hole. I want this spoiled generation to stop having fun and work down a coalmine to pay my pension.
