@KenReid_utv: Looks like the Stormont Speaker job is staying Foyleside. Derry Journal reporting Michel McLaughlin to take over Willie Hay later this year

ken Reid tweets that Mitchel will become the new speaker replacing Wilkie Hay. Mitchell is a good orator and well respected and IMO a good choice for the job.

Good luck to him if he gets it.

Great news indeed.

Nothing articulate about spouting sf/ira mantras and platitudes.
But why not indeed? The world has gone mad. Stormont is a joke and it is impossible to identify one MLA who has any talent. McLaughlin is no better or worse than the rest of them.

You people put far too much faith in your elected representatives. You hold them accountable for every single thing that happens and spit virulence at them when something doesn't go your way. If you feel so strongly about MPs and MLAs then don't vote for them.

I agree, and I hope he gets the same respect as Willie Hay did, and does as good a job.

And you think that Brutish imperialism wasn't a crime. Millions and millions dead, starved and brutally oppressed.

You couldn't make it up

I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised by willy hays' tenure as speaker. He was generally speaking fair and unbiased in the role, and was generally afforded respect by all the members. I think McLaughlin would also be a good choice, not from the military side of SF, a good speaker in his own right and seemingly fairly affable.

As an aside, I'd pay good money to see Sean Barrett take charge of one session of the assembly - it'd be like the scene in father ted where dougal takes the funeral...
