Most underrated bands/artists

List bands or artists who you feel went unappreciated in their time ie didn't get the critical or commercial success that they deserved. Such criteria rules out the obvious success stories U2, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Oasis etc.

Here's mine for now and I'll probably come back with more

Rory Gallagher-Could have been bigger but then again Rory deliberately tried not to be commercial.

The Smiths-Cult band now but during their lifetime they only had one no.1 album and two top 10 singles in a time when chart success was measured in true value and not the constant downloading of rubbish by idiotic teenage girls.

The Housemartins-Led by future Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton. Clever lyrics and very good vocal group. Only lasted 2 albums and while they did have a no.1 single with the cover of 'Caravan Of Love' their fortunes declined with their second album before they finished in early 1988. Their two albums are a great listen.

The Pixies-Many classic songs and a stand out album in 'Doolittle' which has to date has only a paltry 2 million. I'm seeing them in July.

The Blades-Their best of is a great song collection and it's amazing that they weren't at least charting in the UK Top 40 with their mod/new wave sound in the early to mid 80s. Only Downmarket ever even charted in the Irish charts. Saw them 3 years ago and they were pretty good.

Discharge, Crass, Conflict and Flux of Pink Indians, but then they were all Anarcho-punk and strictly non-commercial.

I shall even the score with you, do not worry. You are on my radar now.

Sweden, First Aid Kit. Almost a bit famous thanks to Renault but try the rest of their stuff. Brilliant.

I loved Conflict and Discharge. Vegan Reich are a really under rated hardcore punk band, I really adored them-
