The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu today declared that Israel will never withdraw from the Golan Heights, territory under illegal Israeli occupation.

Netanyahu Says Israel Will Never Withdraw From Golan Heights

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday his country will never withdraw from the Golan Heights and the strategic plateau bordering Syria will forever stay in Israeli hands.

In a ceremonial Cabinet meeting in the Golan marking the one-year anniversary of his current government's formation, Netanyahu said he doubts Syria will ever return to what it was before the devastating civil war that has gripped it for more than five years. He said he would not oppose diplomatic efforts to stabilize Syria as long as they didn't come at the expense of Israel's security. Netanyahu added that, regardless, the border would not change and it was time for the world to finally recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan.

"I chose to have this festive Cabinet meeting on the Golan Heights to send a clear message: The Golan Heights will forever remain in Israeli hands," he said. "It's time, after 50 years, that the international community finally recognizes that the Golan will forever remain under Israeli sovereignty."

Surely now the time has come for the US and EU to impose sanctions upon Israel, as they did Russia over Crimea, even though 90% of Crimeans voted for the annexation?

If they do not, what message is this giving the world?

The Zionist regime needs chaos in Syria to justify holding onto the Golan. It is quite likely they played some role in stirring it up or at least didn't oppose it. Remember Hillary's leaked emails on how Israel would benefit if Assad were removed.

Unless and until the West forces Israels hand with Iran-style sanctions, there's a shift to the peace camp in Israel, the Zionist regime will stay put there, with consequences bordering on what happened in Ireland in 1641 in my opinion, with settler/Palestinian violence exploding.

Another thread where the usual bigots will arrive flies to you-know-what. Israel, rightly, will never leave the Golan unless there is a comprehensive peace plan with Syria. Given that Syria will be in chaos for a long time he is justified in stating the obvious.

No doubt Clinton has privately told him she'd back him on this...

I think Russia needs to convene a UN meeting to put forward a resolution demanding sanctions on Israel because of this, and when the US vetoes it should demand the removal of all US and EU sanctions against it on the basis that they are unfair in comparison.

Where Erdogan and ISIS failed (thanks to Russia), Israel is trying to succeed, namely stealing land from Syria. Someone somewhere is trying to start WW3.
I think Netanyahu realizes that due to Russia the Western-supported Wahhabist savages that have flocked to Syria from all over the world won't be able to overthrow Assad as planned, and thus he's making this announcement while Assad is still besieged, and weak, and while Syria is still in chaos, in the hope that it will be seen as an acceptable position based on so-called 'security concerns'.

Wahhabist savagaes werent planting bombs in the West before 1948. Israel has played a huge role in fomenting Islamic extremism by ignoring international laws that were created to prevent a recurrence of a Holocaust.

Well done Bibi on standing up for Israel's security. There will be no sanctions of any kind because adults know Israel would be attacked if they handed back the Golan. But the anti-Semites will keep hating.petunia

That's what I mean by short-sighted. Bibi is doing the coming generations of israelis no favour. On the anti-semitc non-sense I won't even get into. It has become as infaltionary as calling someone Adolf Hitler. Just silly.
Maxflinn and RasherHash are anti-Semites. Israel has a track record of giving up land for peace. Sinai, South Lebanon and Gaza. They have offered the West Bank as well. All in return for the simple right to be left alone and live in peace.

Syria is still technically at war with Israel having refused all attempts at peacemaking. How do you propose getting over that hurdle ?

Indeed, and you're very welcome..............

Israel will no doubt take the opportunity to extend their border eating up more Syrian land, just like they have done in Gaza and have been doing in the West Bank for years. Of course it was obvious to anyone with half a working brain cell that Israel was never going to give up the Golan, peace talks or not. They are already working with oil exploration company Genie oil.

Genie Oil and Gas has some high profile investors and advisors: Media baron Rupert Murdoch, former US Vice President Dick Cheney, American hedge fund manager Michael Steinhardt and British investment banker Jacob Rothschild are all members of the company’s “Strategic Advisory Board.”

I don't know about that, the zionazis use lebensraum and ethnic cleansing, I think it is entirely apt.

Syria having refused all attempts at peacemaking?!

Israel has twice turned down the Arab Peace Initiative which would have meant a normalization of relations with all Arab countries:

Arab Peace Initiative.

It also refuses every day the Palestinians standing offer of peace in return for a withdrawal from the occupied territories.

Israel wants destruction, and it got it in Iraq and Syria, and is feverishly seeking it for Iran.

Because peace means withdrawing, and withdrawing means less land.

So destruction, apartheid and theft it is, as far as Israel is concerned!

Netanyhu is the "Meyer Lansky" of the Middle East. Lansky was a legendary Jewish gangster.

IIRC Israel annexed the Golan some years ago now

They would be crazy to ever give it back

- unless a functioning Government in Damascus recognised Israel's right to exist

- and that one is a long way down the road....
