The ability to escape from Ireland is certainly topical at the moment. I just came across this exciting bit of news from Capt Mc Carthy in Cork. It looks like there is going to be a sealink between Cork and an unidentified port in Northern Spain very shortly.

Given the terrible condition of the road between Cork and Rosslare, this new infrastructure will be of huge benefit for Munster exporters to Mainland Europe:D.

Anybody aware as to whether the government is supporting this? Because they didn´t want to know about the Cork Swansea route.

Bit more tentative than your headline suggests sadly, they have been chasing this for years and it would be great if they pull it together -

We are continuing our effort with further meetings planned for next week 20th/21st April and the 5th/6th May and should we succeed in aligning the interests of investors and operator we could still envisage a start-up in mid- summer.

From the interest generated and feedback received from people and importers/exporters who have contacted the Port of Cork, we have succeeded in convincing the potential investors of the viability of the service. However due to the current economic conditions in Ireland, Spain and Portugal, they are obviously examining every detail of the proposal.

I know there are a few issues like the lack of a bypass of New Ross, Killeagh or Castlemartyr and a poorish stretch around Kinsalebeg, but in general, I'd have said that's the best road in the country that doesn't go to Dublin.

Heavy traffic being routed through bottlenecks like New Ross, Killeagh and Castlemartyr in this era is a national disgrace.The almost total lack of dual carriageway is another. It´s the standard we have come to accept though.

The ferry service to Northern Spain, if it comes off is going to be a major boon to the southwest region and probably the entire country. Depending on which Spanish port has been selected, and that has not yet been announced, it could save thousands of kilometers per year, journey time, tolls, expenses etc for Irish hauliers. Not to mention the tourism potential.

In the event that volcano ash continues to be an intermittent problem for a few years this route would be hugely beneficial, as Spanish airspace would be less likely to be affected.

The Port of Cork should be using this opportunity to push this to the top of the agenda.

The other half is from Wexford and you can usually do Cork-Wexford in 2 hours now.

Compared for what passes as the road from Cork to Limerick/Galway or Cork to Kerry, it's marvellous.

It doesn't really need to be dual-carriageway apart from Cork to the other side of Castlemartyr and for 10km either side of Waterford. Other than that 2+1 is adequate.

But maybe we shouldn't go there. A discussion of the Cork-Rosslare road will divert from discussion of the potential ferry.

TBH As much as a ferry to Spain would be nice, getting more sailings from Cork to France would be better. Not enough is made of the fact that sailing times from Cork are 2 hours less than from Rosslare.

Certainly, Munster business and politicians should be pushing this route.
Dublin Port capacity is stretched and there are obvious issues around heavy traffic to Mainland Europe being funnelled through Dublin and it´s road network. That same traffic having to transit the UK in order to get to the continent,

Northern Spain is a natural hinterland of Munster. Although separated by a large expanse of water. If it could be bridged by a ferry service taking as little as just over a day, it would be a very interesting project. The icelandic issue, were it to continue/reoccur would indeed make it even more worthy.

The worst of the weather systems generally pass over Ireland and the UK. The southern half of Biscay doesn´t normally get such a bad battering. This year however has been different.

The key to the success will be in the type of vessel selected. A relatively small ferry could have a tough time making deadlines. A large ferry with greater tonnage would be more comfortable and reliable, but would need to be sure of filling capacity. There are already container vessels etc. plying these routes and managing with the weather conditions.

There are already two services operating from the UK to Spanish ports, also transiting the Bay of Biscay. I had a look at the prices there and they seem reasonable. If this were replicated for a new service from Cork, it could be very interesting.

Biscay is a serious transit. Brittany Ferries' ship the Pont Aven plies Roscoff - Cork - Roscoff Friday/Saturday then boogies on down to Santander via Plymouth during the week. It is one sturdy ship.

And that´s the type of ship that´s needed. The thing I´m most curious of is which Spanish port is going to be selected. Sonewhere to the west, such as Ferrol or Vigo could be interesting for capturing trade from Portugal and the more isolated regions of NW and Central Spain.

Great news indeed.Hope it comes off.Swansea Cork is brilliant,too for a foot passenger - there being no reliable rail links this side of Fishguard.Too bad you can't take a ferry from Cork to Tralee btw.It could hardly be less comfortable or efficient than Iarnrod Eireann's' service.

It is great news, but unfortunate that it is doubtful a service will be in place in time for this years holiday season. That said, if the ash problems continue, the new demand may be sufficient for a vessel to "become available".

Brittany ferries have recently made one of their vessels spare. Barfleur(1992) was recently replaced on her route (Poole-Cherbourg) by the new Armorique. She is currently laid up in Ouistreham. 20,000+GT, and capacity for 590 cars or 1530 lane metres. She also made the Poole Santander trip in 22 hours.

The money for this, if it gets going, will come from Brussels under the EU's "Motorways of the Sea" policy.
