Yes folks the first small steps in the privatisation of Dublin Bus begin tomorrow when the successful tenders for various ancillary DB routes on the periphery of the Capital are to be announced

This will have serious implications for Dublin West commuters incl myself

New operator for 10% of Dublin Bus routes to be announced

Results of a tendering competition for 10% of Dublin Bus routes are due to be announced by the National Transport Authority tomorrow.

Dublin Bus itself is believed to have applied for the franchise, as well as Luas operator Transdev and a number of British bus companies.

The 23 routes are all serving outer suburbs of the greater Dublin area and none go into the city centre.
https://www.rte.ie/news/dublin/2017/0809/896308-dublin-bus-routes/

The routes in question are:

17 Rialto to Blackrock

17a Blanchardstown Centre to Kilbarrack

18 Palmerstown(Old Lucan Road)to Sandymount

33a Swords to Balbriggan

33b Swords to Portrane

45a Dún Laoghaire (Rail Station)to Ballywaltrim

59 Dún Laoghaire to Mackintosh Park

63 Dún Laoghaire to Kilternan

75 The Square Tallaght to Dún Laoghaire

76 Chapelizod to Tallaght (The Square)

76a Blanchardstown Centre to Tallaght (The Square)

102 Sutton station to Dublin Airport

04 Clontarf Road (Conquer Hill) to Santry (Shanard Road)

111 Loughlinstown Park to Dún Laoghaire

114 Ticknock to Blackrock Station

161 Dundrum Luas Station to Rockbrook

184 Bray Rail station to Newtownmountkennedy

185 Bray Railstation to Shop River (Enniskerry)

220 Ballymun (Shangan Road) to Lady's Well Road

236 Blanchardstown Centre to Damastown

238 Tyrrelstown to Lady's Well Road

239 Blanchardstown Centre to Liffey Valley Shopping Centre

270 Blanchardstown Centre to Dunboyne

I know our current Taoiseach is all for this and indeed helped lay the groundwork for it when he was Minister of Transport

I would expect though that Ruth Coppinger will be breathing Fire & Fury tomorrow afternoon at Dear Leader over it!

TBH she will be right

These are basically very much 'social service' routes

- it is unlikely they make much if any cash profit as they are currently run

If a Private Company runs they will have to either have to substantially cut survives or put in a considerable price hike (if not both) to make them profitable

Profit Before People....:?

So I hope 'People before Profit' come out spitting Blood on this 1.....

There won't be any hike in fares AFAIK. It will operate on the exact same basis - they just tender to operate the route and meet the performance standards.

I am an ardent critic of most state services , to be blunt I think they are generally between shyte and abysmal ....but i happen to think DB drivers do an excellent job. Management (as always in the state sector) couldn't organise a proverbial piss up ....but the drivers do a good job IMHO

suppose this was inevitable though , especially after the last strike ....monopolies are too powerful , the days of 1 sector holding an entire city to ransom are over

Why would they bother?

Most of these routes just don't have enough bums on seats to turn a profit

100% of all DB routes should be put out to tender. The private companies would run the services in a more financially efficient manner.

Because they have to, by eu law (I think).

But they're not going to contract out any worthwhile routes. The bearded brethren have to be appeased.
I think it's more because previous experiments were a debacle. Remember the outsourcing of nitelinks?
So why are the private sector bothering?

Met a lot of sound drivers over the years but not impressed with DB's service.

Worth exploring:
- Flat fare like in London
- No contact with driver - tag in at a card reader
- Cashless
- Side doors always on buses
- Cut number of stops by 1/4 (seems to be far too many at the moment)

With a drastically reduced service in off peak hours and substantially increased fares....

That is not the point of Dublin Bus!

It is to provide a relatively cheap and efficient service for commuters to make their way across the City and its environs

In the past 10 years DB has improved out of recognition to the dire and execrable mess its passengers had to experience for decades beforehand

Now they finally have it (pretty well) right

- they want to dispense with it

For whose benefit we may ask?

The Commuters

- or the Private bus companies?

They would run them for profit by driving down wages and undermining working conditions for drivers.
