New politics? Stepaside garda station re-opens

As part of the Programme for Government, a commitment has been made to re-open six Garda stations, and while none have been named, media reports claim that one will be Stepaside, as coincidentally demanded by Shane Ross. Given his regular broadsides against political cronyism, one would have thought his personal purity would last longer than five days!

I recall an article he wrote on the realities of our financial situation, the gist of which was that we couldn't afford to offer hospitals, sporting facilities etc to all. This while he was railing against the closure of Stepaside Garda station and the swimming pool in Stillorgan.
Stepaside will reopen, once Shane is alright, everything is alright.

Government closes Garda station - posters react by declaring them useless.

Government opens Garda station - see above.

You just cant win can you? Any chance he stood for election on a policy of re-opening the station and is actually now, you know, having the station opened as people voted for that?

Probably not.

Stepaside should never have been closed. The place must have a larger population than most midlands counties.

Still, you have to laugh at Jack O'Connor calling this 'the most right wing government since the 1930's' when its programme for government involves an additional €6 billion in public spending.

He also wanted political reform, an end to cronyism, blah blah blah.

Shane Ross is a windbag of the highest order.

"Right wing" is a matter of perception....

Re-opening Stepaside will be seen by some as typical parish pump politics---but if you live near Stepaside you'll see if differently, probably.

Of course if a TD from Roscommon or Waterford gets a cardiac unit or a post office re-opened, it'll be seen as typical parish pump gombeenism, etc.....whereas naturally the Roscommon and Waterford voters feel that "it should never have been closed in the first place"

Having done that fearless journo thing for so long there is absolutely plenty in public to take him to task on. Getting a Garda station reopened is just not meaty enough to cause any embarrassment.

I think that this should be a cause of celebration.
Frances Fitzgerald has actually done something as Justice Minister.
Bula bus! or as she'd put it "jolly good show"

So lets get this straight. Reopening the garda station is bad news....

Only on P.ie.
Depends on who is getting the garda station opened......

If it's that annoying Ross, we'll all yell "Sucks, boo! Parish pump..gombeen politics..taxpayer's money...no wonder the country is the way it is...so much for new politics...a Healy Ray wouldn't get away with this"

If the garda station remained closed, we'd all post "That lying scum snouter Ross...he lied to the people......Pinocchio....broke his election promise...sold out his voters to get at the trough and get his lotto pension...he'll never, ever be forgiven, the scum"

That's how we roll on P.ie

Been in government for a few days so far. What else has he failed to deliver on?

At least he's a windbag with some power who may try to do something. Prefer that to a communist windbag on the public's time spouting platitudes while refusing to take part.

So based on a rumour, ok. Stepaside or any other garda station previously closed is going to see a miraculous turnaround in crime figures cos some fat middle aged lad who has recently taken up cycling will be there for a couple of hours every second afternoon. Dublin local gombeenism good, anywhere else bad...
