The new 22km M18 motorway with a total scheme budget of €207 million opens today nine months ahead of schedule. This new motorway will significantly enhance the road infrastructure of the region and save approximately 20 minutes during peak commuting times between Ennis and Galway.

The gas thing about this stretch of road is that there seems to be some official doubt or confusion in "official" circles at the moment as to whether it can technically be regarded as a motorway, since motorways should not technically end abruptly as is the case at Gort in this instance, in the absence of the next projected stage to link up the M6 at a future junction 18 outside Athenry.

However, and you'ld wonder if it was intended to let them off the hook, whilst not reflected in the NRA route plan on their website, according to a colleague of mine who drove it last week, there is a Junction at Crusheen so that technically the section from the Barefield, Ennis junction to Crusheen could be regarded as the M18 whilst the section from Crusheen to Gort can only be currently regarded as the N18 motorway standard dual carriageway. Still not sure of the status of the section from Limerick to Ennis?
