Piece on Ireland and the Eurozone coming up in a moment...

Our Economics editor Paul Mason will bring us the latest from Brussels where Europe's finance ministers are holding talks this evening.

There is intense speculation that debt-stricken Ireland may be forced to use EU money to resolve its financial problems and avert the possibility of a Greek-style sovereign debt crisis.

Watching it ...haven't watched Newsnight for ages ...prefer CH4 of late

Hopefully more honest balanced and objective than any of the hysteria we've heard on either side of the debate in Ireland

But from watching the Royal coverage it seems Newsnight has also succumbed to the Tabloid style of news that seems to have overtaken the rest of the BBC News in the last few years

Interesting, confirmation of what was hinted at on "Primetime" that the U.K. will be the major player in the Irish bailout. Whether it be a market for or exports, the destination for our emigrants, or EU funding the U.K. is still there to protect us from ourselves (or at least our politicians).

Good piece but wrong on one item. It is not unheard of for a Central Bank to solve the retail banking system. That is the classical role of a central bank - but it is simply not one that the ECB is prepared to play at this moment in time.
