Ivan Yeats criticised the town of Ballybofey and Donegal on his radio programme. He questioned why anyone would want to live here and that Donegal was costing the state too much money. He suggested that Donegal be sold to the Brits. The programme in question can be heard here.

Listen Back | Newstalk - Ireland's National Independent Talk Radio Broadcaster
- Friday 22nd October Part 3 / about 9 mins in.

This is disgraceful carry on for a radio presenter IMO and he should be sanctioned by Newstalk. Anyone that wishes to voice an opinion on the matter can contact the shows editor at garrett@newstalk.ie

It's called free speech. The cost of free speech is that you will occasionally be offended by others opinions. Small price to pay I think. Personally, I'd sell Leitrim.

Maybe you don't get it but Yates is a wind-up merchant who deliberately says things to get those who have a humour-bypass all wound up.

Chill out, would you. It was A JOKE.

Yates is a thick block head who should really join the Sindo. He lectures us all on what cuts should be made to social welfare etc. Yet he ran away from politics where he could have some influence, and he draws a good ministerial and dail pension, as well as earning salary from NT and Examiner for his ramblings. Maybe he was leg pulling, but his humour is like moonlight on a tombstone.

Yates slags off someone or something every morning. It was a tongue in cheek comment. It was designed to get a reaction. Have you ever heard him slag off Man Utd? This is followed by a tirade of abusive texts from Utd fans. Dont take life too seriously. Where is your sense of humour?

Sell us to the Brits please.
Yay free health care for all.
Though mind you we'd have to drive to Sligo for the cheap petrol

Perhaps the people of Donegal (myself included) would have expected better from a former FG TD.

Obviously youve never been in Leitrim.

The Newstalk elites have never forgiven the county for its courageous resistance to the Lisbon Treaty in 2 referenda in the face of the most impossibly biased coverage from Newstalk. I like Ivan for his stance on public-sector waste but he went too far this time. Not a sacking offence though (quite).

Why would you expect better from any TD? The political establishment have been at best ignoring and more usually belittling Donegal for 90 years. But Donegal returns 4 FF and 2 FG TDs, generation after generation. Donegal is a perfect case study of the people's Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to our broken corrupt and useless political system.
