Nóirín O’Sullivan's private email account, used for official business was hacked - should she be sacked?

Her Dropbox account was hacked in 2012
ST, Nov 20th O’Sullivan used private account for garda emails
Garda commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has been using a private email account to send and receive official correspondence, in apparent contravention of garda regulations on communications security.
Did she have permission to use a private account for official business ?

If the counterparties she communicated with did not use the same email provider (e.g. anyone using an offcial sector Irish email address)- did they ensure that the emails were encrypted when sent over the public internet ?

Prior to the public disclosure of the Dropbox hack, did she, or the Irish offical sector, get any warnings ?

Did the Garda undertake a "root and branch" counterintelligence review to understand what might have been exposed, and implications of same ?

Do you have faith that this matter will be well investigated ?

Nearly 32 million of the passwords are secured with the strong hashing function bcrypt, meaning it is unlikely that hackers will be able to obtain many of the users' actual passwords. The rest of the passwords are hashed with what appears to be SHA-1, another, aging algorithm. These hashes seem to have also used a salt; that is, a random string added to the password hashing process to strengthen them.

If there is any details in relation to any crimes,Garda information, or investigative personal details of anyone or anything the repercussions are huge. At the least criminal trials could collapse and at the worst state security could be breached.

Surely no one at her level in the Gardai could be so stupid and incompetent to have any whatsoever work related items in her private email account. As she has no public credibility and to restore public confidence that no information has been breached a full investigation should be produced a.s.a.p.

Also - what user license had she with the service provider - and where was the data hosted ?

Nóirín is not known to have much intellectual capacity ... and I very much doubt that she'd have had any to give over to data protection niceties ...

Very very curious.

Who gave this information to the Sunday Times, and why?

Possibly her work email account account was not secure?

Apparently, garda IT set up gmail accounts on staff phones, which seems to go against this policy, but is needed they say, for the efficient working of the phones - presumably android. Wouldn't be wise to keep anything sensitive on such phones as they get backed up to google's cloud as well, amd who knows what kind of malware might be running also.

At a time of competing controversies, this scandal feels a bit 2nd hand and 2nd rate.

I doubt Enda has a Gmail account. More likely a hotmail or eircom.net for him.
If Enda is reading that, he'll be frantically 'asking Jeeves' what Gmail is.....

The dropbox breach is a bit troubling though. Given people's tendency to use the same passwords everywhere.
