Nolan admitted that he conducted his programme on Wednesday night out of fear. So how can he claim it was representative of anything? The mob ruled. He ran the programme for one section of the community. Is that responsibile broadcasting?. I know Nolan is too young to know about the Frost Programme on the night the unionist way of life died in March 1972. But he must have been made aware of it. The programme he conducted yesterday was capitulation on stilts.

/MOD/ There's a thread on this here: http://www.politics.ie/forum/backstage/204487-nolan-show-bbc-ni-16-1-13-audience-filled-flag-protestors-shocking-stuff.html /MOD/

He got some heat on Thursday's for that perception.

Still, it's probably a good idea to have a solid intra-community PUL debate on this problem IMO. CNRs are far less likely to be influential in shutting down the issue with loyalists involved in this for obvious reasons. Pressure within the PUL community has far more chance of creating pressure to end it. It's people in PUL areas who often bear the worst of it because they're kept up at night by riot, noise and other disorderly conduct, blocked from going places, worry about and/or experience personal harm and property damage, see their local business suffer, don't want to see a rise and revival of loyalist paramilitary power in their neighbourhoods, etc. The 'fleggers' aren't going west of the Foyle in Derry or the Falls Road in Belfast...they're massing and doing this in the Waterside or East Belfast, Carrickfergus, etc. Who wants to be a constructive prisoner in their own home by local skangers or worse?

Not necessarily at all. Loyalist paras and/or skangers have plenty reputation of intimidating people in their own communities and even hurting or killing them. Are they concerned with the harms they're causing to innocent PULs here? Not in the slightest. They're also not known for 'patriotism' or 'defending the unionist/loyalist community' etc when dealing drugs to local PUL kids and engaging in other crime and willing to intimidate people into tolerating that. Republican dissidents don't live in PUL neighbourhoods...they do.
