there is apparently a new book published in Sweden calling for a Nordic federal state united under Denmark’s Queen Margrethe (why Denmark and not Sweden I dont know)

According to a Poll 42% of Nordics support the idea

If it happened the new country would be the 12 biggest economy in the world

A Scandanavian UK, what about the Finns and the Norwegians?

This has been tried before. It didn't work then, I don't suspect it would work now either.

Technically, Scandinavia only covers Norway and Sweden, Norway already is a kingdom, presumably this proposal is just for the three Nordic monarchies.

Because Denmark's is the only "real" monarchy.

It's an interesting idea but I don't see why they'd bother

I suspect the Kingdom/Republic issue is being overplayed; presumably any Nordic Union would be a sort of deeper European Union: individual states could remain their traditional constitutional fabric, i.e monarch, with a republic-type secretariat or commission at the top. The idea makes some sense; these countries have far more in common with each other than they would ever have individually with the EU.

Norway is not in the EU, Sweden, Denmark and Finland are;
Noray left a union with Sweden just over 100 years ago, I haven't heard they want back in;
Iceland left a "union" with Denmark about 60 years ago;
Finland moved from Sweden to Russia in the early 1800s;
and I'm sure there were various other combinations at different times.
Doesn't look like a runner to me!

Was Lech Walesa one of them?

Everybody wants to get with Norway. Norway is like the Wayne Rooney of European countries at the moment as they are running surpluses while everyone else is running deficits.

Who is this Pole and how did he or she know about this?

Can we join? It would mean honest, accountable and open governments, efficient health services and a well regulated banking sector. No, maybe that's too great a price to pay....

I think the SNP mentioned at some point that an independent Scotland could join the Nordic Council

I read about it in the Economist. Don't think the idea will take of. Plus there is a legacy of colonisation of the Nordic nations by Sweeden that has left a bad taste in the mouths of the Nordic nations.

I never forgave them lads the Vikings, I'm still harbouring a grudge and deliberately getting myself all worked up about what they did. The harder I think about it the more the hormones take me. Shower of pointy hatted feckers, if they hadn't been so much better led, equipped and organised we'd have never stood for it.

When I think of all those poor Irish people I never knew from Adam, and think about how they must have suffered, well it makes me feel very vexed, but also strangely pleased with myself to be carrying such a great burden on their behalf. Please join me in demanding that Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford be closed down on account of them, and you can feel pleased for yourself too.

Most (or all - check) of those cities had existence before the Vikings.

Sure never mind the facts, they're widely perceived to be Viking in origin and that's all that counts. Doesn't matter if we were already selling slaves from the ports or not lets blame it all on the Vikings. The bloody bastids.

No offence but you have given enough clues in all your posts to indicate that you perceive the Gaels to be savage and unaccomplished or even 'wiped out' as you put it, now it seems you are trying to argue for something that just isn't true (that the Vikings created Dublin, Cork etc) which also conveniently disinherits the native Irish.

Sure we were already selling slaves, so were the English, the continentals etc.

On the OP, yes there is a lot of history there but nothing remotely as bitter as that in the British Isles and Ireland. If it is an economically valid plan then it is sellable to the people there. As for the situation of the Royal famillies perhaps they could come up with some sort of joint royal authority and mate the heirs of both Royal Thrones to produce an offspring which would rule over the new Union? (Or perhaps being 21stC Scandinavians and so civilised it might not be considered proper to have a kind of arranged marriage - even for their Royalty?) Have to be careful though, the European Royal famillies are so inbred i am sure each one has a private geneticist on retainer to advise if certain unions (of the carnal variety) are advisable.

I imagine the Finns would be the least enthusiastic about this proposal.
